Fall Night Market

HEY ASB!

Social  just wrapped up the Fall Night Market last Friday, 9/21. Thank you to everyone for their help (commision for setting up in class, volunteers for their dedication, PR for their beautiful graphics, and Tech with the camera booth and music)! Lets get on with the feedback:

As a quick recap:

  • Chill welcome back event (activities, food, prizes)

    • 250 stamp cards and 250ish prizes

  • Sunset + Fall Night Market Themed

  • Cafeteria and the Quad

Here are some discussion points:

  • Length of activities (people felt it was too short)

  • Long lines for activities, food, and check in

  • Quantity of food (food ran out in first hour)

  • Toppings ran out before boba base

  • Student music request form

  • Other ways of creative promo

  • Ways to improve the efficiency and organization of set up/clean up

    • How to improve on the volunteer handbook?

  • Sign up sheet and Volunteer Organization (last minute sign ups)

  • Barely any people in the lounge area of the cafeteria

  • Was the overall vibe of a night market achieved?

Please comment on any feedback that you have, so we can improve on future events! Thank you :)))

With <3,

  1. Hi social,

I really enjoyed the night market! It was a really POGGY WOGGY UWU event. On a serious note, I think y'all captured the essence of a night market. It was really nice to see so many people having fun. I think that for korean corndogs specifically, the price should have been $6 instead of $5, because the margin on them was really slim. I liked the games on the upper quad as well which seemed to be really popular. Great work!

  2. Hi Social!!
Great job on Fall Night Market!! I really liked the vibe of the event, especially with the lantern decorations. I was working the popcorn station and since it was one of the free foods we were offering, the line was extremely long. On top of that, the popcorn machine is not the fastest, so we had to keep telling people to come back in 10 minutes or to wait in line. Is there a way we can premake the popcorn in the future? Also, for the boba bar, I think the idea was really cute and creative, but it didn’t seem very practical. For example, the cups had no seals, so it was less convenient for students to carry around the event. Other than that, I think the prizes and activities are all really cute and the students seemed to enjoy the night market :)

  3. Hey Social! Great job on the Fall Night Market this year. I find this event specifically extremely refreshing because its something that hasn't been done before. I like the freshness and I think that we need to spend more time as a class brainstorming new great ideas like this one. Overall the vibe of the event with the music and decorations was executed extremely well. I think that you all captured the feeling of a night market perfectly. Things that you guys can improve on is ordering more boba toppings and possibly making multiple boba lines. I was not working the event but went in to help in the boba line because I saw that they were struggling to keep up with the amount of customers. I think that splitting the boba line into 2 will make it go by smoother. I have a lot of friends who complained about staying in line for boba for 30+ minutes only to reach the front and find out that there is no more boba left. I also worked with Peter on speakers and noticed that a lot of people came up to us recommending songs. We ended up not playing 90% of the songs because they were either explicit, meme songs, or just didn't fit the vibe. A song recommendation form might be problematic because I feel that people would just spam the form with meme songs and that would take away from actual recommendations. Overall I think you guys did an amazing job and I am excited for the next social event!

  4. Hey hey,
First off, working at fall night market was a super fun time and people around me told me that they enjoyed the event -- so super great job!! Personally, I thought the idea of stamp cards was super cute and fun as a way to direct people to different stations/areas while also rewarding them with a small prize at the end. As someone who worked in the food section, I would highly recommend get 2 people for cashbox in the future instead of one. During rush hour, it was really chaotic and having just one person kept people waiting longer than they should've and getting change was also harder to manage. Also, it'd be great to specify or place a stronger emphasis on the different flavors offered (mainly for donuts) as this would speed up the process a lot since I did have to tell nearly everyone who was buying donuts about the different flavors being offered. Otherwise, super great job and I look forward to future events :)

  5. HI SOCIAL,

I really liked how the event turned out. I think the really cool part about the event for me was the originality, and how people appreciated the small aesthetic choices by you guys in setting up events like this one. I think the most important thing to take away from this event when it comes to improvement is having a realistic amount of supplies, especially when it comes to aspects like food service, and amount of people volunteering etc. When it comes to music, I think a music request form would be a good idea but I also think it could be hard, especially if the certain music a group of students would like either doesn't fit the tone of the event, or is not clean enough to play at a school sanctioned event. We would have to make it clear that if people want to request music they would need to make sure it's clean. Just to touch on one last thing, it was really sad that there wasn't a lot of attention in the lounge area, since I thought it was a really vibey area. I think in the future we could either setup something similar outside so its more approachable/available to people, and we could also have PR make signs showing people a way to get in there. Good job guys!

  6. Hey Social!
Great job with the Fall night market! I loved the event and even though I wasn’t there for the event, the setup was quite smooth and the quad looked beautiful!
A suggestion I have for song requests would be to post a sticker on instagram stories that requests song choices. That way, Social can go through the song requests and take out all the meme/explicit songs. It could also serve as promo because when people interact with the story, they get more interested in the event. For food, Social should definitely plan for a bigger turnout because I heard that boba ran out really fast. All in all, it was a great event and I’m excited for a lot more like it!

  7. Hey Social, great job with the night market! I thought the event was very well put together, with everything from the general vibe of everyone there to the mood setting decorations. The photo backdrop was also a nice touch. I only have a few suggestions I'd make, starting with lines. Whether it was boba, cotton candy, or popcorn, due to the popularity of the event there were way more people than one booth could handle. I know we only have one machine for each popcorn and cotton candy, but we can probably look into pre-making some of those in the future as it subtracts a lot from the experience of the students. If we cant do that, we might even want to invest in one or two more machines for each since it may be better in the long run. The boba line, on the other hand, could probably be split into multiple lines without as much of an issue. I would also recommend increasing the supply of the boba stand, as many people waited in line just to be told there was none left of what they wanted. Worst case scenario there's a bit extra. Another thing would be the prize counter, and while this isn't as big of an issue, most people took all good prizes within a few minutes, not leaving very much for all the other people who arrived late or took stamp collection at a slower pace. There could be more prizes of the same type so people who get them on time don't feel discouraged that they missed the one they wanted, or another solution that could alleviate the problem. Besides that, great job, I really enjoyed taking part in the event and I'm looking forward for what social is coming up for in the future.

  8. Hi Social!!

Loved loved loved the night market! I think overall it was a really good event, and it was so much fun! Suggestion for next year since I was doing face painting is A LOT MORE FACE PAINTERS!! The line at face paint was absolutely insane, and since Erin and I didn't work very fast...there were lot's of people that literally waited for 45 minutes. I thought the prizes were so so cute and I'm soo looking forward to the future events!!

  9. Hey Social!

First off, I loved night market! It was a great concept and I think people had a lot of fun! I think that the decor with the fairy lights and photo banner was a really smart idea and the whole night market just had really warm and welcoming vibes! I would only say for next time to have the lamp riddles in a more visible place, or possibly have QR codes for the riddles on the table or on the instagram because when I was working at the stamping table people told me that some people removed the riddles or that they could not find them. Overall, amazing job!

  10. Hi Social,

Amazing job with this event! We got a ton of people and personally I had a ton of fun volunteering! I do agree that some of the activities were short, but that gave students a chance to just chill and socialize with each other, which is what these events are all about. I talked to a few students after the event, though, and some of them said that the event felt a bit too open and could have been more structured. In terms of the atmosphere, I felt like the night market vibe was partially achieved. Before the sun set, the quad and cafeteria had been completely transformed, but by the time the sun set things were just a little dark. There could have been more sources of light, especially around the food stations, to achieve the environment a night market would give off. Looking forward to the next big event (especially volunteering with Alex Li)!

  11. Hi Social!

Great job on the event! I definitely enjoyed "volunteering" and heard from several of my friends that they enjoyed their time there as well. I really thought the idea of a scavenger hunt was both clever, fun, and a good way to incentivize the student for participating in some of the activities. When I went outside occasionally, I felt that the overall feel of the night market was achieved and enjoyed the "aesthetic" of it. When over hearing conversations, I heard a bit of struggle in trying to make it through the scavenger hunt, but I think that mostly everyone enjoyed it. Good work social!

  12. wassup social,

super great job at the fall night market! as both a volunteer (setup, 1st shift, cleanup) and a student participant (hungout during 2nd shift), here's my feedback:
    1) When working check-in, me and Anika felt pretty overwhelmed. There should have been more people working at that table so the students waiting in line could be let in faster. BTW, using the wristbands as a form of tracking how many students showed up was lowkey genius. But I think certain aspects of it was counterintuitive- for instance I heard that only students with wristbands could purchase food / participate in activities, but other students just had their friends buy food for them anyway, and some food stations didn't check for the wristbands at all.
    2) After talking to a few students, I think a lot of the activities were great, but students breezed through them quickly / got bored of them and left early (especially after a lot of the food sold out). In the future, each activity should take longer (such as DIY activities that students would invest more time into doing).
    3) Lastly, I think communication to volunteers could have been better in general. For example, if volunteers working the 2nd shift didn't have a job because food was sold out, they should have a default job to go to that might need more help (like face painting or Henna drawing), instead of just goofing around in the quad LOL

    super great job in general!

  13. HI wocial,

Great job with Fall Night Market, you guys did amazing! I think two main critiques I have with the event is pushing the timing a little further into the night because it is a "night" market and it should be night time. Another thing is that we can bring in different clubs and small businesses to sell their specific items. That way it'll bring the community more together. You can also definitely look into collabing with Clink on the club aspect. Overall, great job and I am looking forward to HOCO DANCE!!!!!

  14. Hi Social!
Great job on the Fall Night Market this year! The aesthetics were amazing and the event was overall great! I think one thing that could have been improved was the switch between first and second shift volunteers. It was a little hectic getting to different stations without buffer time in between. Maybe in the future you could have an "intermission" type thing and have a 5-10 minute break to switch shifts. Overall, great job!

  15. HELLO SOCIAL!!!

You guys did such a great job with night market! I had so much fun volunteering and seeing everyone enjoying themselves. For the activities, the scavenger hunt with the lanterns was a really unique idea, but I feel that it was a little too quick for most people, and there were also problems with people taking clues off. So, in the future, maybe there can be more pr and details on the scavenger hunt, and also how to use the stamp card, as there was confusion about that.
Also another note, but I don't think the boba bar is super necessary. It's fine either way because *boba*, but while the boba bar is a super cute idea + yields more profit, it is also messier and gives smaller portions. The cups didn't have lids and many of them weren't filled as much as people were paying for.
AND I love the idea someone mentioned during class of inviting clubs to sell things and give the market a super market/craft fair vibe.
Overall great job social!! It was a super memorable and special event!

  16. Hey Social!

Amazing job on Night Market, it truly felt like a night market! The stamp card was a great idea and one that I think we should continue :) I did however notice that some people wished that there were more decorations since it was mainly the lanterns. I think some stall type vibe would really contribute to the feeling of a night market. I think something else that we could do it host like carnival games as well, to establish that vibe. It could be simple like throwing ping pong balls into cups or the basketball game, but when there are prizes associated, people are more likely to engage and be competitive.

I thought that the boba cup was a really cute idea and despite not having it filled up all the way, people like the personalization part. Because of our experience this year, we could order more boba toppings. An easy and cheaper alternative for toppings is to buy the big tubs of lychee jelly!

Lastly, I think having clubs sell things or host small activities would help create the market part of a night market!

    Great job!

  17. hi social!!

You all did amazing on night market, it was a lot of fun and just seeing so many people together at a chill but exciting event was incredible. It was really fun volunteering for the star jar and having everyone guess and stamping their stamp card. I think the stamp card was a really great idea and should be implemented in the future because it really gives people an incentive to do the activities but also a sense of accomplishment. The only thing I noticed that could have been improved is that a lot of people were confused on how to complete the stamp card (ex: where to find the photo booth, how to do the lantern riddles), so I think in the future it would be really helpful to have instructions on the back of the stamp card so that it is more clear. I also think that in order to contribute to the more night market vibe, I think next year there can be even more decorations and perhaps making each table selling food look more like a stand. Other than that, wonderful job!! I think it'll definitely go down as one of my favorite events this year.

  18. hey social,
first off, good job on fall night market. it was sm fun and the whole vibe was great. overall, everyone had lots of fun. i think something you guys can do is if you ever do host night market again, i think it would be cool to do it on the football field . there will be more room so everything won't be as squished and also you can decorate the pathway to the football field using lanterns and lights. also, towards the end of night market, working the food stations was a little harder because there wasn't that much light. overall though, good job!! it was a very successful event.

really great job on fall night market! attendance was great and for our first social event of the year, i think it did phenomenal

a few points continuing on from the outro in class:
    - aesthetic > convenience: i think that if we were to market the event as a night market, the aesthetic is important and a little bit of inconvenience is okay
    - about the riddles: i thought it was super fun, just making sure kids don't mess things up (maybe go in with the expectation that kids can and will mess things up)

not much other feedback for me, i really vibed with the event :)

  20. hey social!!

fall night market was so much fun to be at and i appreciate all the aspects of it that you guys incorporated to make it feel like an actual night market. i worked the cotton candy booth for the second half of the event and we started to run out of the cotton candy sticks. people helped us create the sticks from paper by just rolling them up. it worked for a while but the regular sticks were a lot easier and more convenient to use. towards the end of the event + clean up it got pretty dark and it was hard to see. maybe we could have lights or lamps to use when this happens. it would also be easier to see what needs to be cleaned up from the floor since a lot of the scraps were tiny. people really seemed to enjoy the event and have fun with all the activities. amazing job and i cant wait to see what other events social puts out for us!

  21. Hey social!!

I absolutely loved fall night market, it was so nice seeing everyone gather in the quad and bonding with each other. I was really surprised to see the amount of attendees show up to this event. I was working at the popcorn machine and because we kept asking people to come back for popcorn I was thinking whether we can start making popcorn during set up. Knowing where the popcorn stand will be, I think you guys should prioritize the popcorn machine table when setting up. I think to have more recognition for the lounge inside the cafeteria you guys can add that to the promotion graphic on the side that thers a lounge inside the cafeteria or have a map of the layout of the event so students also know where things are. Overall, I loved the little prizes and games you guys have, it really added to the idea of a night market. Good job on this event, you guys deserve a break and can’t wait for homecoming.

  22. Hi Social!

Wow, the Fall Night Market was so incredibly innovative, aesthetic, and fun. When the project was first intro-ed to the class, I imagined it’d be something like last year’s hoco fest, but you guys really exceeded all expectations. The lanterns in the quad were especially cute and really set that asian night market feel. One thing that might be worth adjusting on the volunteer handbook is the number and type of workers at the prize table. I was working at the prize table, and throughout the night, many students came to ask me questions about where to get stamps, how to solve the riddles etc. and I didn’t know most of the answers. I was able to look most of them up on the volunteer handbook, but it might be nice to have 2 volunteers, so it’s not as fast paced or a social commissioner there to help answer questions. Overall, great job social!

  23. Hi Social :)

As a new event to ASB (and one of the first ones of the year) I think it was incredibly successful! I heard so many good things about it form my friends and classmates, and I think it should definitely be continued in the following years. As a volunteer of face fainting, I found the amount of people that me and Allison had to take on to be a little bit overwhelming at times, but Ivan did come over many times to offer us breaks and water which was really nice. One suggestion I have for the face painting booth specifically is having pictures of inspo because a lot of people would come without knowing what they want, and we would stand around looking online when the lines could be moving forward.

  24. hi social! great job pulling together the night market. it was an extremely new event this year and despite that the attendance and enjoyment from students was great. here are some tips for next year that i noticed as a check in volunteer:

    1. we definitely need more people for check in next year. this year it was just maple and i, and we had to scramble to rip the wrist bands, put them on students, dispose of the wrist band ends, hand them the game cards, and instruct them in the loud crowd.

    2. there was a lot of wind that day. this isn't something too easy to track but maybe checking the weather the previous night and planning accordingly would've made things better. it affected check in mainly because the game cards and wrist band ends were flying everywhere, which caused a lot of mess and disruption amidst the already busy crowd

other than that, people seemed to really like the build your own boba booth, the henna, and all the games, so keep it up social!

Although I was unable to attend the night market, I heard so many good things about it. My friends who did go enjoyed the decorations and the food provided---but I did also hear there was a really long boba line. Great job overall!!

great job on the fall market! since we tend to have high turnout for lynbrook events, i would buy enough food for 400-500 ppl from now on! i also think we should advertise the games and stamp card more! maybe this can be done at check-in as i am not sure many ppl knew about it!

    great job again!

Overall i think this event was pretty good. Decor was on point and a lot of people bought food and went to the stations. I know some people complained about the corndogs being cold so maybe look into a method of keeping them warm? Other than that its better to sell out than buy too much food but just take a note of this year's sales for reference next year. good job!
