Homecoming Pep Rally

HELLO!!

first of all, super great job this past week! homecoming is an actual grind but we all pulled through 💪 we wrapped up the week with the hoco pep rally during lunch, and we'd love to hear your feedback:

some discussion points:
  • how could we have better communicated with students that this wasn't a "normal rally", but more of a callout for the Football/Cheer team?
  • during the actual rally, how could we have better engaged with students and/or the teams being presented
  • did any part of the rally feel too fast or slow? (keep it mind we wanted a good chunk of lunch for people to take photos with the senior backdrop/decs)
  • during the rally, several of our mics were cutting in and out. next time, how should we handle this and adapt to the situation?
thanks for your feedback!!

  1. hi spirit,
as a part of tech I think you guys handled the mic situation as well as you could have. next time we'll charge the mics the night before and do a quick sound check since that might have been a mistake on our part. you could have stressed in the promo video that this was not a normal rally, since I felt like that wasn't too clear. I think the pacing of the rally was fine, you kept it fast and had some time for people to take pictures with the senior backdrop for the rest of lunch. due to the fact that it was a lunch rally, I feel like people would be more focused on just eating and watching rather than participating and cheering, so the timing wasn't in your favor there. This was a new thing though, and you guys were able to pull through, so great job!

super fun pep rally :) as to communicating that it wasn't acutally a rally I'd suggest completely renaming it into something where students can easily tell what to expect while also highlighting that its purpose is to highlight the football team/cheer team. In addition, you could look into communicating with co's to get some posts or announcements directly through their respective social media accounts or other methods of communication that the classes have established. This way the message is more spread throughout the school and people can know what exactly to expect. I feel like the rally speeding was fine -- nothing really felt rushed or dragged on. Honestly for the mics, y'all adapted pretty well and as a spectator I barely noticed much and it seemed to go on quite smooth -- great job!! Something I want to quickly touch on (honestly not a huge deal) is maybe having someone guiding people telling where people where to sit and maybe even hyping up the crowd. I was there pretty early and there seemed to be a bit of confusion of where to sit/which area was okay to sit in vs which areas were off limits. Overall super great pep rally and I can't wait for future rallies that spirit puts on :)

Awesome pep rally! I think there was great student engagement, and it was a great hype up for the homecoming game. About the microphone - I thought you guys adapted perfectly. There was barely a break in the rally itself, and I only noticed it for a split second. I think the rally timing was good as is, and it was easy to follow and interact with. As for promoting the fact that it is supposed to be a callout for the football and cheer team, I think you could reach out to the football/cheer teams and ask them to help promote it via their social medias as well. Overall, the rally was great and I think it was an excellent build up for football/cheer!

  4. Hi Spirit,

First of all I want to commend you guys for pulling thru especially during the long haul that is hoco week. Unfortunately there were technical issues, and as asb tech I think you guys did the best you could. As other people have said here, I think there was a fairly large amount of confusion regarding what the pep rally was really for. I think in the future we should call it something other than a rally, just so this confusion never happens. For tech, I think we should be less nonchalant about our technical services, especially with special events like this one. Lastly, I think if you guys are able to find ways to bring the audience into the event, I think that would allow for more interaction (ex. players high fiving people etc).

  5. Hello Spirit,

I'd like to say good work on the rally, it was very exciting to be a part of the audience. Many have said this, but I agree that the thought of a pep rally is somewhat confusing and that maybe next year it could be called something else to avoid confusion. Similar to what Peter said, I also think that it would be really cool if there was a tunnel of students that the players could run through (maybe like a "gauntlet"???) instead of just cheer. Otherwise, I think you guys did an amazing job putting on this mini event and I'm definitely looking forwards to the next spirit event!

I thought the pep rally went great! I thought that despite the mic issues, you guys handled it very well given the situation. The timing was great, as you guys spent a good enough amount on the main attractions which were cheer/football, but also left sufficient time for people to take pictures.

One thing that I would like to comment on was the way that the rally would be advertised. I think to communicate better with the students, I think the promotion should go on the class instagrams since the ASB feed will be bombed by Hoco posts and the Freshmen/Sophs/Juniors will have been done at that point. In that story/graphic, it can be explained that it is meant to honor the parties that contribute to the Homecoming game. Of course, next year when Hoco isn't on a 4 day week, I am super hyped to see the Hoco rally come back as the sole attraction on Friday though!

Great job on this years Hoco Pep Rally! I think that you guys did a really good job continuing on with the rally even when some of the mics cut out. Honestly even with the cut outs the entire thing went smoothly and the experience was not hurt whatsoever. I think that in order to make the event less confusing you could call it a parade or something else other than a rally because when people hear rally they think of the traditional class competitions when this doesn't fit that category. The pace of the rally was also really good and I think a lot of the students appreciated the extra time to get lunch and take pictures with the backdrop. Additionally I feel like the drumline deserved more of a shoutout. Overall it was a really good rally and I am looking for the next one

  8. Hi Spirit,

Great job on the pep rally! I think it was a great way to wrap up the week of homecoming. I think people were still a little confused as to what the pep rally is and what it represents, but I think as it started going, people understood that it was more just about supporting the football and cheer team before the game. I think the only thing that I found a little weird was the spacing and where students were, I think it would’ve been nice to ask people to stand a little closer to the stage. I also think the drumming was a really nice touch.

Amazing job with the pep rally! I think it was a great event and I'm so proud of you guys for pulling it off! I think that people were a bit confused on whether they should be standing or sitting, or where they should be standing/sitting, so I think for next time maybe we should have it during the brunch/tutorial time if possible! Overall, great job!

great pep rally! i thought u guys did amazing—i know there were mishaps here and there (ex: mic) but much of it was handled professionally and did not significantly affect my experience (as a participant) i think we could have stressed that it was not a fully rally a little more, but i think once everyone started sitting in the quad sporadically, most got the gist -> i think it was ok

i thought engagement was fine! definitely felt a bit odd since it was from a different angle (audience in front/sides instead of on 2 sides) but was definitely no less engaging

    excited for fall rally!

pep rally was so much fun and you guys did an amazing job. i think people did not know what to expect when they heard there was a pep rally so they just assumed it was like a regular rally. i know we had it included in the hoco overview graphic but i think it could have been helpful to have its own graphic. this way you could mention how the pep rally is specifically for recognizing the football and cheer team. the rally was at a good pace, it didnt seem like you guys were trying to rush it or stall. people def appreciated the time after the pep rally to take photos as thats what a majority of people did after. mics are always unpredictable so i dont think there was much you guys or tech could do about that but you guys adapted well to the issue. it was a memorable pep rally and you guys did great!!

Great job with the hoco pep rally! I enjoyed it very much, and so did all of my friends. For the mics, you guys did extremely well with adapting and I hardly noticed. Some feedback I have is that in the future, Spirit could rename the event, like a lot of other people suggested. Also, it is probably best to make it clear that the event will not take the entirety of lunch, because a lot of people didn’t want to sit down and watch since they thought they wouldn’t have time to eat. Overall great job Spirit!

The pep rally was really fun to watch. On the point about how to communicate to the student body that it isn't an actual rally, you guys could tell the groups like cheer, football, and class officers to spread the word. In addition, as many people mentioned above, maybe just renaming the event in general so that the name does not include the word "rally." Overall, great job and I'm excited for more spirit events!

the pep rally was a great addition to lunch and made the day much more hyped. in addition to what everyone said about renaming the rally, i think it was difficult to hear what was being said during the end - not because of tech issues, but because everyone was cheering really loudly. i understand that you wanted to leave time for seniors to take pictures with the backdrop, but maybe waiting until the shouts died down to "sign-off" would have been a bit nicer (because we could cheer for you then!!) other than that, it was really great, and i had an awesome time :)

the pep rally was honestly a ton of fun— i know a lot of us are reflecting on problems related to audio/tech/general clarity but a lot of that was honestly just because people were having so much fun that it was hard to control the crowd. although we hopefully will have full hoco rallies in the future, something really good about the pep rally was that it REALLY centered the teams going up on homecoming night, which is something that doesn't really happen at a standard hoco rally since people are focused on games + spread out around four corners. this could be an event that we bring back if any other teams start reaching higher ranks/rounds(?) in the future, like boys basketball last year.

    sincerely,

  16. Hey spirit!! Loved the hoco pep rally! I think it was a great replacement for the actual homecoming rally. Something to improve on could be the promotion within the rally. It was really centered around the sports team so maybe next time try adding in at least one game or two just to have the crowd involved with the rally. In addition to that, some people in my classes were a little confused on the aspect of the pep rally so definitely have cos and maybe even the asb class promote the purpose of the pep rally. Other than that I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for more!

  17. Hi spirit!

I really enjoyed the pep rally, and from an outsider's perspective, it was a really fun event. I also really enjoyed the inclusion of the drumline at the rally. For the mic issues, having a contingency plan about who will share mics with one another may alleviate some of the issues. I also think that football and cheer were well represented, so good job with that.

  18. HI SPIRIT!!!!

First of all, amazing job 😁 I didn’t even know the mic went out and you guys handled it really well. As for communicating it wasn’t a normal rally, it would be best to call it something a bit different and emphasize the difference on the promotional graphics.

I also really liked how the drumline was recognized, and their drumming added to the whole spirit of the rally. Many people in the crowd were nodding along to the beat and enjoying that. Overall, I think the rally did feel a bit rushed, but that makes sense with it “not being a rally” and having time for pictures.

Looking forward to the next one 😊

great job !! i think the pep rally was a super cute idea to recognize the people involved in the homecoming football game. like everyone else mentioned changing the name of the event would definitely make it more clear that the event isn't a typical normal rally. the mic issue also wasn't something you guys could control, but i think you guys handle the situation well. i think also if this does happen again you guys can have megaphones as back up maybe. overall amazing job. so ready for fall rally !!

great job with pep rally! i think pep rally was so cool to recognize our football players, but instructions for the event itself was really iffy. the first couple minutes were spent by many trying to figure out where to go, and could definitely be minimized in the future. overall, great job and can't wait for fall rally!

  21. Hi Spirit!

Thank you so much for organizing this mini rally. Even though there weren’t any games, it was so much fun watching the football players do their run in front of the *unbiasedly* beautiful senior backdrop. The drummers being stationed in a line also looked super cool. In the event that there’s another shortened homecoming week, I think a pep rally would be the move because it was still lots of fun and left some time for students to take pictures with senior decs. Most seniors also don't have enough energy for a full rally following their homecoming skit, so the pep rally provides us with a nice break. Great job spirit!

  22. Hi Spirit!

Thank you all for your hard work! I agree with most of these comments on how even though it wasn't necessary to have a rally at the end of the week, it was still a really nice community moment for the entire school after being so competitive and separate the entire week. I think this is something that we should keep in the following years (I actually think from tech's perspective at least that it is a better alternative to normal rallies for the end of hoco week where everyone is burnt out, etc.), but maybe change the name of it to something like homecoming football game showcase.

  23. HEY SPIRIT!! (hey maple (; )

amazing job on our first ever spirit-lead pep rally!! it was really smooth and such an amazing way to recognize our football team as well as hype up our students for the game that night. here are some ideas regarding the discussion points:

    1. potentially changing the name from "rally" to "parade" could differentiate this from normal rallies. i know a lot of my class members were prepping for a legitimate rally so this is definitely something to address for next year

    2. engagement was good in my opinion of students and the football team. most students were eating lunch so having not too much jumping cheering and rather just expecting clapping and screams from the students was a lot better. as for the football team, having each player run out individually gave them recognition and built spirit for their game.

    3. the rally gave students enough time to finish their lunch while watching, which was perfect so they could take pics with the senior backdrop right after, so keeping it the same length next year is probably the best

    4. for the mic situation, maybe keeping the megaphone handy to speak into if the mics go off could help. the mics were being used the entire week so it's expected that issues may occur, but i don't think people remember it too much and the main message came across to the students

overall great job pulling this together even through such a busy week.

  24. Hi Spirit!!

Great job on the pep rally! I think it was a great way to wrap up the week of homecoming. I really like the addition of the drumline at the beginning, it attracted attention to the quad and a lot of people came. However, people were somewhat confused as to what the pep rally is (and that it's not an actual rally) but later they caught on that it was for football and cheer before the homecoming game.

The pep rally was a great way to wrap up hoco week! I think the student engagement was really good! Some students were confused about what a pep rally is and where it would be held, so communication about that to the student body could have been more clear. Overall, great job!

great rally! There was good turnout and it didn't take all of lunch which let students take pictures in front of the backdrop. I think people were expecting an actual rally so maybe renaming the rally to a parade would help clear out misunderstandings.

for "during the rally, several of our mics were cutting in and out. next time, how should we handle this and adapt to the situation?". I think that we should have extra mics (like one or two) for last minute use. In the case that a mic is cutting in and out, one should immediatly swap mics as to not confuse others with the staticy word. I also think if this is impossible, one can just share. Designate who would share mics with and be near each other in case one needs to share!

  28. Hello Spirit,

I loved the rally! However, there was a main problem with the rally which would be promotion and communication on the events. A few things that could be easily done to prevent this would be having more physical promotion and vocal promotions (i.e. An explanation on the event in Instagram combined with a mention during the performances.) Other than that, I believe that you guys did really well for the events. Something funny to add could be making a short reel of introduction music/pre recording introductions for the football players so that they have a more hype entrance and that their names are more clearly read out.

    Thanks,
    Ivan
