Diwali Decs

hey asbcdefg!!

i hope you all had loads of fun with mickey and minnie this weekend :)

here is a quick overview on diwali decs and some things to think about:
1. promoted dressing up (on instagram + AISA email)
- how can we reach people who don't have instagram? (some said that they would have dressed up if they had known we were promoting it)

2. put up a backdrop
- was the location good/noticeable? how can we make it more well known/used?

3. small decor outside of cafeteria walls
- if we plan on doing bigger decs, any ideas as to what we can get?

some previously shared ideas..
- have Bollywood music playing in the quad at lunch
- using announcement time ("today in history..") to share more about the cultural importance of this event
- MILLER: they passed out one indian sweet/savory snack to every kid = more interactive. should we consider doing something like this next year? we do have way more kids (more planning + money), so is it still feasible? would the student body benefit from it?
- asking if clubs/organizations on campus (or even students) would like to help others dress up (giving them cultural clothes, jewelry, etc for the day)

thank you all so much, and please leave any feedback or ideas you have!! 💗

  1. HI SHREYA,

There were some really good ideas shared during class today. I feel like the event definitely could have been enhanced with music, or maybe a performance during lunch from Jalwa or another group. Ideas like these would help promote the vibe of an event happening on campus a lot more. I think the event was really popular on social media and I saw a lot of students posting pictures with their clothing. Maybe having more decs up would have helped (although I know it was around the week of halloween so that would have been hard), but otherwise it was good for the first time this even was being recognized on campus.

  2. Hi PR! (and Shreya ofc :D)

The Diwali decs were so amazing and really spiced up the campus for Diwali. I especially liked the backdrop and I saw so many people taking pics with it. For the future, PR should definitely keep doing what they are doing and just expand to have some bigger Decs that draw more attention. An idea I have is that PR could change it from decs and into more of a full day of celebration. Everyone dresses up, there is a backdrop for photos, ASB passes out a treat like Miller, and maybe have a cultural group perform during lunch. That way it feels like a day of festivities instead of just some decorations around campus. Overall, this was a really fun, unique, and novel event that made the campus a lot prettier!

  3. hi shreya!

the diwali decs + people dressing up was really nice, especially walking around campus and seeing so many people wear beautiful clothes. i definitely agree with all the discussion points from today, especially playing music and handing out candy/food. i think in the future it might also be nice to make a short video about diwali, just to switch it up a bit from the graphics and put more information out there about what it is. other than that amazing job, especially creating a new event that can be passed on for the future!!

  4. hi shreya!!

it was super fun to see people dress up walking around campus. i think the location of the backdrop was good. i feel like most of the backdrops for photos are usually hung on that wall so people expected it to be there. i agree with the suggestion of having bollywood music play during lunch in the quad. i think thats a nice and easy way to further enhance the experience of diwali. coordinating with those certain clubs on campus would be an amazing way to help people dress up if they do not have the clothes to do so! setting up a system where x people are donators and x people are receivers of the clothes would help participation in dressing up on this day.

for decs, i liked the intention of having small decs hung up around campus but i feel like they werent very visible. maybe you guys could use chalk to draw out those traditional decorations people draw at the doorsteps of their houses. they could go in front of the cafeteria where a majority of people pass by and will see. or, if you want to stick to smaller decs have one central location where they all placed so it is easier for people to see. people could pass by and admire them all in one place opposed to seeing one dec spread out. overall, great job with the event!

  5. heyo shreya!!
Super great job w/ Diwali Decs! For promotion, I feel like it did pretty well as I saw lots of people dressing up around me. People were also posting pics on social media (Instagram) -- so great job! For the people that said they would've dressed up if they knew it was promoted, we could try pushing/promoting this a bit earlier. I totally understand that this is right after hoco and it's not super easy to push something with so many other things going on with hoco. Maybe consider in-person promotional methods (posters??) since I feel like for these events spreading the word by mouth is extremely effective as people usually dress up in groups or with friends. If they're walking around school as a group and they see a poster maybe this could help get the word out?

For the backdrop location, I feel like it was chosen super well -- easy to notice, very hard to miss it. I personally really liked the smaller decor as they weren't in your face but they added a nice touch to the school. For larger decs/more noticable ones you can consider hanging smaller objects on the trees in the planters. I'm not sure if there's specific things that are commonly hung up during Diwali, but if there is, I feel like hanging decs in planters could catch more people's eye.

In terms of clubs and the music, encorporating these would defintely increase more participation or attract more people. Just a side note, I really appreciate the graphic on Instagram for more on the cultural importance and other aspects of Diwali. As someone who honestly isn't super educated about events celebrated in other cultures, I was able to be informed in a nice way!

  6. Hi PR,

Great job with Diwali Decorations this year! The primary thing that could improve next year is a much larger backdrop since I feel like with the small size of the backdrop, many people either did not see it or did not pay as much attention to it. I definitely think its a great idea to look at what miller leadership is doing and also do something similar since I think food always gets people to be more interactive with a culture. If our reason for this is to celebrate the cultural aspect of Diwali, food is a great way to do so.

  7. hi pr :]
thank you for trying something new to celebrate our students and the diverse cultures on campus. i could tell that students really liked dressing up and celebrating a cultural holiday with their friends! to engage more people to take pictures with the backdrop, you can tell them that they can redeem a free food item if they take pics. that way, it's two birds in one stone and it incorporates miller's idea too. reaching people who don't have instagram can be done through the week ahead emails, schoology blasts, etc.

to make decor more obvious, you can have streamers near the inside cafeteria area like what halloween decs did --> the decor was just super obvious because everyone had to look up on the wall at some point.

you did an amazing job and keep it up!!

  8. hi pr, great job with diwali decs, it was really cool to see a lot of people dressed up around campus and the decs were done well. I think there could have been more spreading awareness, since some people were confused what was going on while others forgot, and maybe some decs could be put in more mainstream areas like in the cafeteria and other places. overall though, W decs and great job as usual

  9. hi pr :-)
this was a super cool event, and im glad ya'll tried it out this year !!
    1) to promo the event, it could have been emphasized that students are encouraged to lend other students their cultural clothes. additionally, since the point was to emphasize this cultural holiday, i think more posts could have gone out on instagram to educate lynbrook students. (like maybe stories on the history behind Diwali, or what types of traditional celebrations go on & why, these posts could be in collaboration with other clubs/groups on campus as well)
    2) the backdrop was pretty noticeable, but it looked kinda lonely on the wall :-( maybe including handheld decs or a few signs onto the backdrop would have been nicer
overall, i hope pr does more events like this to celebrate the diversity we have on campus :") some upcoming holidays i can think of include Hanukkah, Chinese new year, etc...

  10. hi shreya!!

Diwali decs were so incredible! As someone who didn't know much about diwali before this event, it was really amazing to see everyone some to school in their cultural clothes. I think passing out cultural snacks would be super nice and double as a way for students who arent familiar with diwali to experience a bit of the festivities. I think word of mouth is most effective for encouraging people to dress up because people will usually want to do it if their friends are participating. You did so amazing; thank you for putting this all together!

  11. hey pr :)

i really like the ideas of handing out cultural snacks! its a quick and inexpensive way for students to interact with the culture.

in terms of feedback, the diwali backdrop was a little small– i think when people attempted to take pictures in front of it, they got the brick wall and the floor in their pictures. (or maybe the people i saw were just not very good at framing pictures). either way, i think we could go more all-out next year with the decs. also, besides an insta graphic, i didn't see very much promo for this event. i think ms. kirsh recommended that some members of asb wear cultural clothing on the friday before diwali as a form of creative promo. we did this for hoco dance, and i think it worked well! we can implement this next year.

    overall great idea + creativity!

  12. Hi shreya!
Great job on Diwali decs this year! I think the idea of playing Bollywood music in the quad during lunch is phenomenal, because it is not too much work and does not require purchasing items. I also think the idea of handing out snacks like Miller is also a great idea, because it allows more students to experience different cultures. I also think that asking clubs or organization if they would like to help others dress up would work really well, because I am sure many of these student organizations have some resources they are willing to provide. Overall, phenomenal job on Diwali Decs!

I really liked the idea of incorporating diverse student culture on campus. I think there could be more definition of some decorating on the cafeteria walls, maybe using chalk markers to draw something on the windows that symbolizes Diwali. In addition to the promotion of dressing up, definitly utilize the week ahead emails because parent's would also be able to receive it and maybe a schoology blast too. Like mentioned in class, I really like the idea of handing out snacks and maybe collaborating with culinary arts club for students to try out snacks from a different culture. Finally, I think it would really add to the spirit if you were to play Bollywood music during lunch. Amazing job and keep up to good work!!

  14. hello pr

i think that revealing and recognizing cultures on the lynbrook campus is a super cool idea. similar to many i think that you did a great job, but things like snacks and music would bring this "event" over the top and be more "in the face" to a student. i believe this would get more people to recognize the decs and the event, but otherwise great job shreya!!

  15. hey PR

Great job on the Diwali decs this year. It was really nice to see Lynbrook bring out its culture. All of the people dressed up paired with the amazing decs/backdrop really brightened up Lynbrook. I think that we could use bigger decs in more populated areas such as the quad and cafeteria. Also if we could give out small Diwali snacks out to kids during school that would be really cool as well. I absolutely loved this event so good job!

  16. Hi PR!

I think that the Diwali decs were awesome this year and I loved that it gave me an opportunity to be able to dress up in some traditional clothing to celebrate which I might not have done during school if not for this, but it really gave me and a lot of other students to celebrate and honor this amazing culture! I think that maybe next year you guys could collab with AISA or with another club and maybe put on like a Diwali fashion show sort of thing to show off all of the beautiful diwali clothes! Overall, amazing job!

  17. hi shreya!

this idea was so so cute, all the decs were adorable and so many people loved dressing up to school. i think bollywood music in the quad is such a cute addition for next year. i also really like the concept of handing out sweets and announcing what diwali is about on the announcements so people are more aware. overall amazing job and i can't wait for next year:)

diwali decs this year were SO pretty. i loved seeing people dress up and take photos with their friends. on the point about cultural clubs helping out, i think it would be really cool if there was a henna station or interactive activities set up in the quad. i think that would draw a lot of attention and participation. also, to reach more people about dressing up i think you can do a schoology blast or do some type of creative promo in person. overall, amazing job!!

  19. shreya hi~~

i absolutely loved diwali decs and how it recognized cultures on Lynbrook! people seemed like they were having so much fun dressing in cultural clothes and even encouraging their friends to do it as well. i hands down love the ideas with playing music in the quad and the little snacks because high schoolers go feral for music and food and combining these 2 commonly shared favorite things with culture is such a great way of spreading recognition. The instagram promo seemed like it worked out well because I saw a lot of people dressed up, but I think the promo can also include the photo wall as I didn't know about that. Otherwise, it was such an amazing event and I'm really excited to see it happen again in the future.

  20. Hey PR!

It's great seeing us involve more culture! Although it was a last minute idea, it was great seeing everyone dress up and even some passing cultural clothes out to others to introduce them to the culture! I think a great way to get more people involved is by involving cultural clubs on our campus like AISA and Jalwa. Adding on the the bollywood music idea, we could even potentially have Jalwa perform and showcase indian culture! I'm excited to see more of these events!

  21. Hi Shreya!

I thought this was a banger of an idea and it was something that we haven't really seen ASB promoting in the past. Especially since Lynbrook has such a big population of people who celebrate Diwali, I thought it was really smart of you guys to do a small spirit day where people could dress up. I agree with Khubbie that next year if you pair up with AISA and Jalwa, maybe they can sell some snacks, etc after school to make it an even bigger event. Looking forward to more!

  22. Hi PR!

I thought Dwali decs went really well for it being such a new event! There were a lot of my classmates and friends who dressed up, and the vibes were overall just very nice. I agree with Jeffery and Sophia in collaborating with clubs on campus who would be down to show off their culture. I'm excited to see where this event goes in coming years!

The Diwali decs were so cute and I loved them so much. I saw lots of people participate by dressing up and taking pictures, so I think it went super well! I definitely think handing out food would add to the vibe of the event and draw people’s attention. GREAT JOB!!!

  24. Hi PR,

I really liked the representation we had through the event. I also enjoyed dressing up. I think that we could have maybe begun promotion a little bit earlier as I had some friends that didn't know that we were celebrating at all. Otherwise, it was a really fun event.

  26. hi pr!

I think the decs were great and i saw a lot of people dress up and take pictures with the backdrop. An idea is to ask groups like jalwa to perform in the quad during lunch which is a lot visibilty for your event. something to think about is centralizing the decor around the asb den again because spreading them out makes it so that people see barely anything. but other than that, GOOD JOB the decs looked great

  27. Hi PR! I thought the decs were great! Similar to Halloween Decs, I think we could have larger decorations. I also really liked the photo area, it was super cute and really opened up the floor for other students to show off their culture

    ReplyDelete
  28. HI PURR!
Great job with diwali decs. I think a big thing about decorations is if you are going to do them, then you need to try going with large scale decs rather than smaller-scale decs. I loved the backdrop, but maybe also think about how you can decorate the quad because that is where most people go. Yeah, definitely reach out to AISA to help promote the event and also maybe think about doing some kind of fashion show? AISA did a fashion show for indian clothes in promotion of Silsalay last year and it was super cool. Looking forward to more decs!

  29. hi pr !!

one thing rec can do in the future for events like this is go around taking photos for lookbook/holh— just let us know! also, passing out cultural food items (sweets, drinks) in the quad might be a great way to do outreach, because people are usually down to try something new when it comes to free treats. overall, this event was really cute, and it definitely meant a lot to the people who participated to have a day to dress up and show off their culture. a great first step for asb !!

  30. Hello Pr,

Great job with the event, and I loved seeing people dress up for this Holiday. I wasn't able to participate, but I have some answers on your questions regardless:

"how can we reach people who don't have instagram? (some said that they would have dressed up if they had known we were promoting it)" - You could have a mention of it in the announcements the Friday before, email blast it, and have physical boards in the middle of walkways to promote it. You could also ask teachers to mention it as it is more of a Holiday rather than a special asb event, so they should be more open to mentioning it. A final thing would just be word of mouth where you have people in asb walk around handing cut outs that relate to the event and talking about it during lunch or during tutorial.

"was the location good/noticeable? how can we make it more well known/used?" - I've been mentioning this a lot but you could put physical directors with signs or the chalk boards that Social has with arrows or just use posters with arrows.

"if we plan on doing bigger decs, any ideas as to what we can get?" - A backdrop would be a smart idea, something that we can hang off of the line that goes across the quad. You could commission clubs to work on it or have people do it for volunteer hours?
