Lynbrook Idol
HEY ASB pt2,
From 1/17-1/19, Spirit hosted the 2023 Lynbrook Idol, the annual singing competition to display the wonderful talented singers and select the singer of the Alma Mater at the Winter Rally.
Just to give some insight into the process, all singers were graded on 5 categories, including stage presence, dynamics, tone, etc. We implemented a new weighted rubric this year, with Spirit’s combined vote being worth the same amount as Derek and Ms. Kirsh’s combined vote, to ensure fairness.
Feel free to talk about the audition process, the selection process, or any feedback on Spirit’s performance. Here are some discussion prompts:
Should Spirit continue to stick with a minimalistic script for Idol? We didn’t want to take the attention away from the singers
How accessible was the voting form? How can we further encourage people to vote?
Would it be helpful posting the performances right away to the ASB Insta?
Was the turnaround time for each round too short? Should we space out the competition to give contestants more time to prepare?
Similar to the last prompt, should we hold auditions further back to give selected contestants more time to prepare? (auditions were the week before the competition)
Thank you guys so much for all of your support and we will see you at our lunchtime activities and the farewell rally!

ReplyDeletei think the minimalistic script is good! short and sweet streamlines the competition. voting form was good! i liked the stories and google forms that restrict to 1 response do the trick - didnt think there was any voter "fraud"... i think highlight reels of performances would be nice! just maybe check with the singers and warn them. as a performer, i was okay with the turnaround time, and i think the quick turnaround time is a good test for the singers. overall great job! super nice having it the week before rally week as it alleviated so much stress for yall and the performers.

hi spirit!!
ReplyDeletesuper nice job!! In terms of the script, I liked the minimalistic script as people were mainly there to hear them sing and acutally perform, so getting to the point immediately and putting focus on singers was nice. Posting performances to ASB insta would also be nice as people who didn't go or wanted to review the performances could easily do it rather than going to youtube which would take more time. For preparation time, I felt that the time was actually not too bad. All the singers seemed to do just fine and pull off an amazing performance, though there might have been some stress/more work on their end, but at the end of the day singers still chose to sign up for this knowing the work that would go into it if selected. Great job spirit!!

ReplyDeletehi spirit!!
ReplyDeletethanks for organizing an amazing lynbrook idol! the quad was always filled during the performances and i'm sure that this event lit up people's lunches. here's a couple of points in response to the reflection qs:
- i definitely think that a minimalistic script would be better! getting straight to the point to introduce the next singer is helpful because it allows the audience to compare between candidates' singing without their memory decaying much in between acts. LOL i just have bad memory but this would help.
- making the voting form more accessible: having satvik walk around and actually asking people to vote during lunch was good LOL.when you publicize the google form on social media later that night, you can link the youtube playlist of videos in the description box of the google form so it's easy access for voters to reference. i agree that posting the videos on lynbrook ASB would make things more accessible!
- (i do not sing but this is my humble opinion): i think the turnaround time is fine LOL. usually people who make it past the audition + initial rounds should know a couple of songs that they're confident in performing. i would imagine that preparing is just reviewing lyrics, and picking a song out of their "toolbelt of songs".
- audition timing: if i can recall, auditions happened in the middle-second half of the week. at least moving the audition timeline ahead to 2 fridays before (not the friday before) the week of competition would be good. i know that there was a short turnaround time for announcing audition results + telling contestants to submit audios/lyrics so making auditions happen earlier would solve that. it's great that it worked out this time but it's better to be safe in the future!
really really good job spirit!

Hey Spirit!
ReplyDeleteLynbrook Idol was a success! Amazing job!
I think a minimalistic script was definitely the right call. It streamlined the performances and ensured that everyone’s memory was focused on the singers and their songs.
As many people have said, linking or having a highlight reel of the performers will add PR to the event and also refresh people’s memories when they vote.
Personally, I think that spirit could consider having the performers start singing a bit later, because oftentimes I would still be in the lunch line and the first performer would be singing already. In the same vein, if Spirit wants to do a bit of a comedic script before the 1st performer to loosen up the crowd and take up some time, I think that would be great for the crowd, spirit, and the performer.
Good job Spirit!

HI SPIRIT!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job with Lynbrook Idol! I like the minimalistic script because we can get right to the point of the performers and get through everything before lunch ends. I definitely think it will be helpful to post the performances on the ASB Instagram immediately since people who weren’t there could watch the performances and cast their votes as soon as possible. Great job spirit!!

Hello!
ReplyDeleteTo answer the fourth question about turnaround time, I feel like we could add a day before the final where we invite "eliminated" students back to perform to give the finalists a chance to prepare their "finale" and also to recognize the talent of every student who auditioned and got in one more time. This is similar to what they do on some competitive talent shows, and we can even allow opportunities for students to duet/work together on performances.

hey spirit!!
ReplyDeleteamazing job with idol especially since it was in the middle of planning for wrally.
i think the minimalistic script was a good idea so performers have more time on stage. it is also a little less work for you guys which i think would be helpful considering all the other events you guys take on during this time. having someone walk around with the qr code after the performances was such a smart idea because it was a lot easier for people to vote and also served as a reminder to their face. i think the people who do end up voting, vote during lunch so i dont know how useful it would be to post the performances to the instagram. although it would be nice to just have them posted so can people can watch them for fun later on. im not sure how much time people would prefer to figure out what songs they are performing, but it seems like everyone was satisfied with the amount of time given to them. unless the performers feel differently, i think the turn around time is good as it is now since we don't want to give people too much time to rehearse. i feel like keeping the event to one week is the best. overall, amazing job!!!!

hi spirit,
ReplyDeleteI talked about this in class but in terms of scripting you can just give a short spiel that introduces each of the contestants and their background. don't worry too much about creating a skit-like script since I feel like most people there would just tune out during the transitions and only care about the songs. the script can probably get a bit longer for the finalists, as you can talk more about them as people and give them a good introduction before the competition ends.

Hi spirit!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the minimalistic script because the crown only wants to hear the contestants singing so getting straight to them would be the best. I think posting performances on the ASB insta would be pretty convenient but it would be nice to keep it in one video and make it so that you can scroll through it instead of overflowing it with multiple videos of students singing. I think the turnaround time was pretty ideal and perfect for the first two rounds, however leading up to the final it would be nice to give contestants around 1-2 days to prepare for it because they should rest up their voices and minds before singing in the finals. Other than that good job on Lynbrook Idol this year especially with spirit week going on!

Hi spirit!<
ReplyDeleteGreat job this year with Lynbrook Idol. I know its a student body favorite and I'm happy that we were able to do that for the school once again! I think the issue with the voting form is indicative of the same issues we see with other ASB APP publications where there just isn't enough people with access to a link to download. Perhaps putting up ASB APP download QR codes around school bulletins would help to increase engagement. I really liked the minimal script, with ASB acting as less of the main show especially when we are trying to give the spotlight to others at school.
~peter
hi spirit,
ReplyDeletegreat job with lynbrook idol!! it's always really nice to listen to all the performances. I think it might be good to hold auditions a little earlier, just beause performers might have to prepare a lot of songs to practice, so having a bit more clearance to practice would be good. I also think that it would be good to post the videos on the ASB instagram, because usually instagram is a little more accessible than youtube. I think from the audience point of view, the turnaround time is good just because people can stay engaged throughout the week, but it might be good to consult the singers and participants if they find it too stressful/nerve-wracking to do it back to back. Other than that, great job!!

hallo spirities 👻👻
ReplyDelete1. minimalistic script was great for the first day because there were a lot of competitors. maybe you could ask each finalist to submit a short story of how/why they started singing and share that on the day of finals. i think would be really cute and make it more personal.
2. the voting form was very accessible and it was super great having it available on the lynbrook asb app. i think you all did a good job of encouraging people to vote, and whoever wanted to fill it out did.
3. posting performances right after lunch would be awesome so people could watch it while eating/right after school and fill out the form sooner. also, im not sure if its just me but i suffered from short-term memory loss during idol and 100% forgot all the performances after they happened, so posting it on asb would be bomb 😁
4/5. no thoughts on this as i didnt compete :(
overall, idol was a really fun & unique lunch activity!
bye bye,
shreya 👻
hey spirit!!
ReplyDeletegreat event as usual!
-I think for the first question, spirit should definitely stick to a minimalistic script. We want to make sure all the attention is on the contestants rather than asb
-i think the voting form was pretty accessible, maybe making the link a lot shorter would encourage more people to vote
-i think for people who have clubs and other activities during lunch, posting the videos right away would allow people to watch and vote
-from what I know, a lot of people had little time to prepare their song, so I think giving people a long time after auditions would better prepare them
Overall, great event and I can't wait for more from spirit <3

ReplyDeleteHi spirit!!
ReplyDeletemy friends and i go crazy for this event because it's always so amazing to see students showcase their talents.
i heard this in class and i think it's really good-- it would probably be best to start off the first 2 days where there are the most contestants with a minimalistic script, and then edge into more detail on how the contestant got into singing, why they chose this song, etc. etc.
It would also be really cute to use social media more to introduce the contestants. Like having those tournament brackets and contestant profiles introducing the contestant and what song they chose.
The best ways to get students to vote (imo) are announcing it after each performance and using the "link" function on instagram stories for an easy tap-and-vote process. I know most people often don't fill out the form because they're too lazy to type out the tinyurl... It might even be worth it to have people in the crowd airdropping the form out (i don't know if this is allowed/is a violation of people's privacy)
This is something small but in parallel to how Derek announced the winners for Lynbrook idol, maybe having a cute promo event for the competition is having the winner from the previous year do a small performance the Friday before Lynbrook idol week! It would get students hyped up/aware of the event especially since it's right in the quad and in everyone's face/ears.
Great job spirit!! i really really liked the event and it must have been so hectic with this and winter rally back to back, so super proud of/mcuh respect for you guys!

Hi Spirity Spirit Spirit!
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the 3rd discussion prompt about the performances on instagram, I think one roadblock we run into with Lynbrook Idol is that a lot of the Lynbrook population leaves before lunch on tuesdays and thursdays, so not everyone is able to listen to the singers sing. Posting the performances on IG would definitely increase accessibility to the performances. Moving into improvements to the voting system, the system this year definitely works. Although it is probably pretty tedious, I think it's the most effective way to get people to vote before they forget.

heyy spirit! i loveedd watching all the performances (lynbrook talent goes crazy). here are some responses to the discussion points:
ReplyDelete1) it would be helpful to post the performances to the asb insta right away. this allows people to watch the vid and decide on their vote faster.
2) although the turn around time is short, i think that's what makes the week special because it's continuous performances. however, if performers are super stressed from this turnaround time, performances can be held in the span of two weeks only on mon, wed, fri because a lot of people leave before 7th anyway.
great job on this event!!
-nina
hello spirit!!
ReplyDeletefirst off, great job on lynbrook idol! it's always amazing to see all the talent the lynbrook has. i definitely agree that keeping the script simple is very smart. i believe that giving contestants more time to prepare for their performances should definitely be looked into. if we could somehow spread out the days so it gives the singers more time and also "builds suspense" for the viewers. Otherwise great work on a super successful lynbrook idol!
-Colin
hii spirit!
ReplyDeleteamazing job on lynbrook idol! doing it the week before the spirit week was really smart bcuz last year it was SO chaotic. i think a minimalistic script is good since people lose attention so the simple transitions are good enough. the voting form was really easy to fill out, it being on the app, so with more promo for the app next year i think it's good to stick with it as a platform for voting. it would definitely be helpful posting performances or at least pictures of the performers with their song title so people can remember who sang what. posting performances is preferable tho so those who missed them can still vote accurately. i think as long as performers are given a weekend and told that they'd be performing at most 3 times, the responsibility is then on them to prepare three songs over the weekend. can't wait for next year:)

Hey Spirit!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on Lynbrook Idol! It is so much fun watch Lynbrook idol (even my mother watches each video on the Lynbrook ASB youtube channel)! To answer your question, I really think that it would be nice to post the videos on lynbrook insta as soon as possible. It allows students who werent able to go (due to X reason) the time to watch it and vote. I also think it will help increase the amount of people participating in lynbrook idol allowing lynbrook idol to become more precise(?)
- Seren
Hey Spirit!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on lynbrook idol. I think the format this year was fine, but the less complicated is the better. Most people just want to hear the contestants sings so the script doesn't need to be super developed to save you guys time and make sure the crowd doesn't get impatient. I think the voting form was fine this year. Great job!
Hao
Hey Spirit!! Here are some thoughts on the discussion prompts:
ReplyDeleteKeeping the script minimalistic is a good idea to keep the focus on the singers. However, it's also important to ensure that the event flows smoothly and has a cohesive structure. Perhaps finding a balance between the two would be ideal.
The accessibility of the voting form is crucial for getting more people to vote. Providing clear instructions on how to access and submit the form, as well as promoting it on various platforms (e.g., social media, school announcements), can help increase participation.
Posting the performances on the ASB Insta can be a great way to showcase the talent and generate more buzz for the event. It can also serve as a way for those who were unable to attend to still enjoy the performances.
The turnaround time for each round may have been too short, especially if contestants need more time to prepare. Spacing out the competition and holding auditions further back could be beneficial in ensuring that contestants have enough time to prepare and showcase their best performance.
Overall, it sounds like Spirit did a great job with the Lynbrook Idol event, and making small adjustments to improve the accessibility and structure of the competition could make it even better in the future.

Hey Spirit!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job with Lynbrook Idol this year. I really like events that showcase the skills and talents of Lynbrook. I think its a good idea to keep the scripts short and sweet so that you don't take focus away from the actual performers. For the voting form it might be nice if you put up or walk around with QR codes that make it easy for people to vote. I think the turnaround time was okay because if it spans a farther time period then people might lose interest in the competition. I also think it adds a nice added challenge to the competitors. Overall I really loved this event and can't wait for next years.
manit
Hello Spirit,
ReplyDeleteAmazing job with the event. I loved all the singing as well as the showmanship that was done this year. I just have a few opinions and answers to some of your discussion prompts:
Spirit, if possible, should continue to stick to a minimalistic script for Lynbrook Idol. I believe that the spirit and power of the performances come from the singers and the performances themselves. However, I really did enjoy the introductions that were placed at the end of the year. Perhaps extending this and making it include i.e. their singing journey or the reasoning behind choosing this song would be a good touch as there is still a lot of lunch left remaining even after the performances.
I believe that having a larger turnaround time combined with recorded performances would be the key to a successful event. In the case of this, having a longer turnaround time would allow students to have a more defined and fair grading system/agenda. This combined with recorded performances will lead to a much more fair judgment of the event. This will also lead to higher audience numbers due to the performances not being on a Thursday.

hi spirit!!!!!!
ReplyDeletelynbrook idol went so well!!!! i think spirit should still keep the script minimalistic since everyone watching is there to cheer and watch the singers. it would also be less work on you guys if you create a more minimalistic script. i think the voting form was pretty easy to access and the qr code satvik was holding helped a lot too. i think it would be helpful posting the performance video on insta too since it may be easier to access for people. i think holding audition further back would be good since contestants do need time to select songs if they were selected. this also may solve any issues with late submissions. i also think that it'd be nice if lynbrook idol was like a 2 week thing since most a lot of student leave after 3rd period on tuesdays and thursdays so instead of having it every day, it can be every other day. overall, amazing job on lynbrook idol!!
- carrie
hi spirit!!
ReplyDeletegreat job on lynbrook idol! this was such a fun event for both students and singers and i think it gave many singers at lynbrook a spotlight they wouldn't otherwise be able to get. in terms of the script content, having a light script for the first few rounds was good since it gave singers more time to sing, but for the semis and finals, i think having a longe script would be nice, not just to fill up time, but also to make the singers feel more special. an idea would be to do a short live interview of each singer before or after they singer.
-emma
Hey Spirit! I loved the way you guys planned Lynbrook Idol and I think you guys did a great job overall! For voting, to get more engagement maybe you guys can use a feature on instagram to do voting. On the other hand, if you want to stick with a form maybe get it sent out in more email blasts so that it reaches more people. Overall, amazing job I truly enjoyed this event!
ReplyDelete- Kimaya
Hi Spirit,
ReplyDeleteLynbrook Idol was really fun and the performers did amazing. I think that as the week goes on, more skits between acts adds to the performances and helps engage the audience. I also agree with emma's comment that talking to performers (maybe in the semi and final rounds) before or after songs may help create a more show like spectacle which could be a lot of fun. Really great work!
- Shyon
ReplyDeleteHey Spirit!
First off, amazing job with Lynbrook Idol! I have to say, the format this year was spot on. However, I have a little suggestion to make things even smoother next time. Keep it simple! Most people just want to enjoy the contestants' performances, so there's no need for an overly intricate script. By keeping it concise and straightforward, we can save you guys some time and ensure the crowd doesn't get restless or impatient.
On another note, the voting form was perfectly fine this year. Great job on that front!
Thanks, Sagar.
hi guys :)
ReplyDeletehere's a bit of input on your discussion points:
1. the script was fine, but seeing as this IS a spirit event, having a bit more of a skit/gimmick at the beginning of the show could be more engaging. yes, i totally agree that the singers are the main event, but your personalities could spice up the event even more.
2. voting form was also fine! nothing to change there. to encourage people to vote, you could ask the performers to participate in a reel asking people to vote. people love seeing their friends on ASB's social media, so that could be another avenue for engagement.
Would it be helpful posting the performances right away to the ASB Insta?
3. i don't think there's much you can do about the turnaround time. don't sweat it!
u guys rocked this event (get it... rocked... like a rock star... because singing?)
kyrsten
hi spirit-
ReplyDeleteI think lynbrook idol is so cool as we get to see how many talented singers we have among our peers. It is an event that I and many of my friends and classmates look forward to and have a lot of anticipation for. I thought this year it was put on relatively well, but the planning and preparation could be better. I understand that this is a stressful week for spirit with spirit week and winter rally, so I would encourage starting the planning process way earlier (first semester and throughout break). Also coordinate with tech for lots of runthroughs and mic checks as this aspect is super important for the performers.
Hey Spirit!
ReplyDeleteI think that the minimalistic script was great! Lynbrook Idol by nature has a pretty large viewing audience however every year our votes are a little low. I think a way to boost the amount of voters that we get is by posting it to the lynbrook asb instagram as a story immediately after the performances. Along with the link, you can also post the full clips of the performers singing! As for turnaround time, I think that it would definitely be beneficial for performers to have more time! It's easier for them and probably easier on spirit as well! I also super duper appreciated having all the audio files early for tech :) love spirit!
- Sophia <3
hey spirit!!!!
ReplyDeletePhenomenal work on lynbrook idol! I think that the script was great, and allowed for the focus to be put on the singers. I think you could potentially get more votes by setting up a table where students could vote (such as on the upper quad). This way students have a easy way to just go up and vote without having to open up a link on their phone. I believe that the turnaround time between singers was fine, but it would not hurt to give more time between rounds! Overall, GREAT JOB!
