Homecoming Court

Heyo ASB 😚

Homecoming court happened at the end of halftime, where court members were pedicabbed to risers and sashed + crowned. Here’s a recap:

  • Court members are nominated and voted for: 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 2 juniors, 8 seniors

  • Seniors with the most votes are crowned royalty

  • A barcode of the pdf brochure was printed/taped around the bleachers + at the clink freebies table

  • On the last page of the brochure were Hoco Court Messages, a form for people to write cute messages to court members

Discussion points:

  • Should the brochures be online from now on? Past paper brochures wasted a lot of paper if compared to how many people actually read the brochure

  • Nominations + voting

    • There were joke nominations and votes and not enough people were voted

    • We should have allowed each person to nominate/vote up to 3 people- thoughts?

  • Dress code

    • Tuxes were sponsored and free but dresses had to be individually purchased- would opening up the dress code be better? Tiaras + sashes were gifted

  • Music + script

    • Hard for the announcer to match up the bio with the court member

    • Would music in the background be better when court is rolling in? Maybe asking pep band to play?

Please leave any comments/thoughts you have about hoco court!

  1. hey rec,
Super great experience with hoco court! In terms of online vs in person brochures, in person brochures would have a nice touch and possibly have more people reading them, but due to the waste of paper, I think online brochures were fine -- you were still able to see all the info wanted. For nominations, opening it to 3 people would be nice. With just nominating for one, you're forced to narrow down your choices to just one choice when in reality there are so many more qualified people. That way, you're also left with more options to vote from and people from different groups (skit vs decs vs dance) are more familiar with the people they've worked with as a head. For music/script the bio wasn't super important in my opinion and if it's harder on the announcer just announcing the name of the court member and then playing music would be fine. Otherwise, super neat event and I look forward to more rec events in the future :)

  2. hi rec,
Homecoming court was an amazing experience. I do think you should have printed paper brochures like last year, that way people would be able to easily access the bios in their entirety and not just hear the shortened version spoken by the announcer. That's really it, otherwise the entire event was great and planned out really well. The cab ride was especially enjoyable.

i always enjoy hoco court and i think this yr was no exception. it was great to see teachers and recent alumni participate.

for some of your discussion questions:
paper brochures- hard to say for certain, but i have a feeling that people enjoy having the paper brochures as mementos from hoco court. you'll have to weigh sentimental value vs. efficiency to decide in the future.
dress code- by opening up the dress code, i assume you mean letting hoco court members wear whatever they want? as long as it's formal, i think that's a good idea, to balance costs.

    great job!

  4. Hey Rec!

Hoco court was amazing! I heard great things about the event and you guys did a job well done! A few pieces of feedback I have is that the barcode for the pdf brochure was not working when I got to the football game, around 4th quarter, so that is something Rec might want to look into. Also, I agree that hoco court nominations should be expanded to 2 or 3 people because there are lots of qualified people that might not make it on the ballot if it's just one person. I think that voting should still be limited to one person though. Overall, great job Rec with hoco court!

  5. Hey Rec!

I think hoco court went really amazing and I think you guys did a great job! I think to start off the barcodes might not be the best approach for next year, I think they were a great idea but I think that a lot of people forgot to scan them at the cLink table due to the line for freebies and in the stadium some people didn't realize that they were there and some people probably sat on them or accidentally covered them up. Also I think there was a problem for the brochure on android phones after scanning the barcode, so maybe next year you guys could maybe release it on the Lynbrook ASB Instagram or something like that. Overall, great job!

great job with hoco court! on the point of nominations + voting, i think opening it up to 3 is better. it is pretty hard to narrow down a list of people to 1 person, especially when homecoming involves so many people. it would also eliminate the possibility of there being too little nominations. about the dress code, i think opening it up to anything formal is good. not everyone has black attire, whether dresses or tuxes, so it would eliminate the costs for buying new clothes. i also think having some variation in dresses or tuxes isn't a problem either. overall, amazing job!!

hoco court was amazing this year, and such a great experience. i definitely think the roses were a super nice touch, and as usual, the tiaras + sashes were cute! i do think that opening up the dress code to more dresses would be nice, but having everyone wearing one, or a few selected colors, would make the event look cohesive and put together. furthermore, i agree with gio & kyrsten on having paper brochures, because it would be a sweet momento and many people didn't know about the bios (they were sitting on the qr codes or didn't know they existed). i understand that its a waste of paper, but i think it's worth it in this situation. also, maybe having some more time after everyone was on the podium to take pictures would be nice! maybe some shots by asb tech or duo pictures? (last year's ones were cute!!)
overall, it was such an amazing event and a great memory. thank you all so much for putting so much work into it!!

thank you so much for hoco court! it's a really nice way to recognize some of those who contributed to homecoming because it really is a laborious process that takes so many hours and work T_T I think the pdf brochure is good, since printing does take up so much ink and paper, but I think it might be cute to just make a post on instagram rather than make the brochure. For voting I think it's a bit hard to manage between real and joke votes, but I think it just depends on what rec wants hoco court to be, is it purely for those that were a part of homecoming in terms of skit, dance, decs, or can it extend to the entire student body? since it's usually a tradition in other schools to just open court to everyone. I also think that in the future it's okay if there's no bio, or just making it really really short, because often times no one can really hear it anyway. otherwise it was really great, amazing job!!

  9. Hey rec,

Good job with hoco court. Its always great to see people who worked hard during hoco szn get recognized. I think the brochures should be online just to keep a sense of sustainability and to not waste paper as I think a majority of people don't look at the brochures. The last thing I have to say is I think its only fair that if he tux's are payed for then dresses are also payed for since both are one in the same just for different genders (both being decorative dress).

  10. Hi Rec!!!
I loved hoco court this year! I feel like the QR code was not that effective even after we put one at the clink table. A lot of people didn’t look at it unless we directly pointed it out to them. I do think the paper brochures are more meaningful as people may want to collect and keep them. In addition, it's easier for people to read because they don’t have to scroll, zoom in on, and stare at their tiny phone screens throughout the event. In addition, opening the dress code sounds like a good idea for some variety! Great job rec!!

court was great this year! really impressive how y'all worked around the paper brochure situation, and i personally used a qr code. i would say maybe advertise the message link at the end separately since it's past the thank yous which is where most ppl stop? and for clean-up seren and i were a lil confused bc we didnt know who was taking care of the qr slips. open dress code sounds good to me too!

  12. Hi Rec!

As a member of the homecoming court I really enjoyed my experience. You all did a really good job adapting to the time constraint during the halftime show. For future, make sure to contact nominees before their name is on the ballot. Additionally, I was confused why male nominees had no crowns at all, as it kinda took away from the goal of making all students feel equally included. Overall, great job with court!

court was sososo good this year and i think the qr code was super smart. it definitely could've been executed better such as a bigger qr code. In the future, definitely think about where you're putting the qr codes so that everyone will be able to access them but overall i think you guys did such a good job.

Phenomenal job on hoco court this year! I definitely think that there should be an option for paper brochures; maybe in the future you could do a hybrid of both. This way, people who would like to take physical copies can do so without having to waste as much paper. I also think that it would be a good idea to open up the dress code, as that would allow people to more easily find clothing. Overall, great job!

  15. Hey Rec, great job with hoco court, it was very well done and great to see all the hard work those people put in get appreciated in a big way. I think brochures could have been online or eliminated altogether due to lack of usage and wastefulness. I also think that all suits/dresses should be paid for if one gender's is, just for fairness/equity. Overall it was great.

  17. Hey Rec!

Thank you so much for putting this event together. Here’s a couple of thoughts
    - Dress code: keep it! It saves so much thought on what to wear and photos also look so pretty when everyone is dressed in the same color. For shoes, the dress code can be looser (since most people didn’t follow it anyway haha)
    - Nominations/ballot: It’d be nice to allow multiple nominations so that more people get nominated- it’s so hard to choose just one >< It’s also super important to check with nominees and make sure they’re comfortable with being on the ballot.
    - Pamphlets: having physical pamphlets is really nice since it not only recognizes court members, but also band/colorguard/valkyries/cheerleaders, who don't have any other channel of recognition.
    - During the event: u guys were so organized and prepared and it was so much fun!
    Great job rec!

  18. hi rec :))
i always love love lovee this event you guys put on every year, its a great way to truly highlight those that put their most into hoco. here r some of my suggestins & improvements for next time:
-keep paper brochures! it recognizes ALL groups involved in hoco / the football game, and its a really cool souvenir game attendees can keep
-have online brochures as well! but not in pdf format// i think each hoco court member could be posted onto the lynbrookasb instagram with their blurb :) giving them appreciation on our social media is a great way to highlight them as well
-for nominations, i believe there was an issue with how some of the nominated members were chosen for 2024. if this ever happens again, voters should be notified immediately that the form has been edited to include more nominees that previously weren't there. it's not the greatest when voters realize they might not have voted for the people they actually want to be courted :/
-dress code: yes, it might look better for photos for everyone to have uniform outfits, but i know i felt pretty frustrated that there were no financial dress-support last year. i think it should be opened up for whatever type of formal wear, with no color code.
-lastly, i wouldn't play music when theyre being presented! a huge part of what's so great about hoco court is when the students on the bleachers are cheering and screaming things at them LOL

thank you for putting on court to recognize the hardworking members of hoco! overall i think it ran really smoothly and the supportive atmosphere was really wholesome as well. thank you for getting the hoco court people flowers! i think that's a great addition to the sashes/crowns and i'm sure the recipients appreciated them. on the note of digital brochures, is it possible to send it to mrs. jackson so she can link it on the week ahead emails so there's more recognition for marching band/guard/hoco court? i think mrs jackson usually says something like "oh it was a great week of hoco!" so the hoco brochure can be attached there if someone missed the game. or the link can be promoted on instagram if you want more engagement/views, so that it's not just limited to looking at the brochure during the game.

thanks for working hard on this event!

good work on hoco court this year and think yall did a great job. i think that the actual event went pretty smoothly. i personally think that if there are ways to potentially cut down time that could be better? i'm not sure, it just felt a bit long as a part of the crowd. otherwise i think that if there was a way to make voting a lil more public, that could potentially change the results and make it a more interesting?? once again it might just be me, but great work rec!!

  21. Hey Rec!

Great work on hoco court this year. I love all of the recognition yall have been doing for people who worked so hard during homecoming season. I think that if you guys are going to sponsor tuxes then it is only fair to also sponsor dresses since the only real difference is defined by gender. Also I think that you guys should keep the brochures online to not waste paper and instead put the QR codes in more accessible places. Overall great job!

  22. hi rec!

thank you so much for recognizing the amazing efforts of our class members. this really makes all their work worth it. there were a couple of issues that we should address for next year :

    - there was a tie across 4 of our class members and 2 were chosen out of random instead of approaching us with the issue. what should be done next year is either add all 4 nominees onto the ballot, hold a tie-breaking vote, or approach COs to decide.
    - class members tend not to know who all is involved in what parts of hoco and COs have that information so it should be consolidated and released with the nominations form so people are making knowledged nominations

other than that, the execution of the event on the day of was so sweet!!

great job on hoco court!! i think the tiaras and sashes were so cute on all the class members nominated. in my opinion, i like the brochures more because i didnt really see any qr codes. most people just ended up sitting on them so i never got a chance to look at the wonderful brochures. if they were physical i think more people would look at them. next year, i think it better to have physical but if we dont want to waste too much paper, i think you guys can do a hybrid. overall though amazing job !!

  24. Hey Rec!

Hoco court was great as always! I love the new idea of using QR codes for the brochures instead, however, I feel that there should be a bigger poster and more posters containing the QR code so that more people will see it. Additionally, having a balance between the number of brochures being printed and QR codes would still be good since I think some kids would want to take brochures home as a souvenir. As for nominations and voting, you could potentially ask for a short reason as to why they're nominating the specific person, and for voting, you could ask the individual who was nominated to write a short description on how they contributed to homecoming! Great job :)))

  25. Hi Rec!
As usual, great job with hoco court! To give my thoughts on paper vs digital brochures, I think this is definitely a topic where rec needs to set their priorities coming into next year. For sure, people are more likely to look at paper brochures, as they have something physical that they may look through during the game. However, if you are aiming for sustainability and believe that the spirit of hoco court is more of the people and less emphasis can be put on the brochures, I think keeping the digital brochures would be fine as well. I agree with Sophia's point that you could make a larger poster for the QR code though.

  26. Hey Rec!!

Good job with hoco court this year!! nice to see people who worked hard for hoco get recognized. Although paper brochures are quite expensive, they add to the festivity of the event (and it's nice to have something to physically hold)--but that does largely depend on the budget and focus of rec next year. As for nominations, there definitely are going to be trolls or what not, but as long as the majority of the voters are voting sincerely, 3 nominations should be good. Overall great job!!

  27. Hi Rec!

Thank you guys for spending the time to plan out this event that recognizes those who put the most into homecoming. It's really nice to see my peers who gave their everything get the credit they deserve. Something that I was thinking about though, is to have the class officers nominate the court members. I think they are the ones who, at the end of the day, knows who sacrificed the most for the event, making sure that they are actually seen.

nice job w hoco court. my only suggestion for the event is making sure you have very clear communication with members. make sure you are using formal platforms and have a list of all the emails or messages you are sending so you can keep track! thank you!

good job with hoco court! It's great to see people who do so much work for homecoming be recognized. I don't think the voting form went out to enough people from the spreadsheet i saw and make sure to check in with CPs before voting goes live to make sure there aren't any trolls on the ballot 😭 other than that it was a good event.

  30. HEY REC!
Great job with hoco court your guys' hard work payed off in appreciating the core contributors for homecoming. In terms of brochures, instead of going completely online or creating waste with paper, maybe consider making a few large scaled brochures and placing them around on poles or something. I think this will really help encourage people to read the brochures while still not creating as much waste!!!

  31. Hello Rec,

While I wasn't at the event, I can help address some of the issues mentioned. "Should the brochures be online from now on? Past paper brochures wasted a lot of paper if compared to how many people actually read the brochure". I think they should be online and also easily accessible. The brochures are created to make sure people get the recognition that they deserve so it would be smart to have it easily accessible as well as cost efficient. In the case of this, you should try to place massive QR codes are the ends of each stands for example a massive poster with a QR code on it, or have it to the side so that it doesn't block the view. "Tuxes were sponsored and free but dresses had to be individually purchased- would opening up the dress code be better?" I believe that opening up the dress code and instead giving references to previous years is a smarter decision than making people conform, which gives them less options.
