Lynbrook's Got Game Spirit Week & Fall Rally

hi asb :-)

first of all, we want to say a huge thank you for helping out at our Fall Rally, and participating throughout the spirit week. for this rally & spirit week, we tried out a HUGE amount of new things (from the feedback we got on the welcome back rally). here's a quick recap of everything we tried:

Spirit Week:

  • a different backdrop for EACH spirit day. on monday & tuesday, we taped them on the wall between the cafeteria and the girls bathroom. on wednesday & thursday, this was taped on the 500s building wall facing the gym
  • more tik-tokky/trendy spirit days that didn't necessarily correlate with the larger board game theme (blanket monday, mathlete vs. athlete tuesday, white lie wednesday, and twin day thursday)
  • recap reels posted for each day on the lynbrookasb instagram
  • having lynbrooklookbook post each day (thanks rec <3)
Rally:
  • more intellectually-based games, like the Trivia Showdown
  • a more interactive rally, where each of the spirit members were trapped in a game
  • including CPs in the rally intro video
  • having a moderator / 5th voice playing and interacting with us throughout the rally
  • the progress bar slides projected onto the screen & instructions for each game
Some points for discussion:
  1. Given post-homecoming burnout, and how close it is to finals season, this is the first ever rally we've had in November. Is the timing of this spirit week and rally off? Are people too sick/tired? :-(
  2. We tried out many forms of promo for the spirit week, how effective was this? (backdrops & reels for each individual spirit day)
  3. Do you prefer a skit-like & interactive rally (like this one), or a simpler one to follow like Welcome Back Rally & Pep Rally?
  4. How can we have better crowd control at our rallies? Getting students to the bleachers at the beginning of the rally, and getting student volunteers for games on stage as soon as possible?
thank you for your feedback :)

  1. hi spirit,

First of all, I really liked the concept of the rally with the slides and the whole moderator idea. Giving the rallies lore makes it much more immersive and fun. Next time, maybe gesture towards the slides so more people notice them. I feel like the timing was fine, and I don't see a reason why people might be too tired of cheering for their class. The video promo after each day was a new thing that I enjoyed. If crowd control is really a problem, you could set up some sort of divider like caution tape in front of the bleachers, but I feel like that takes away from the whole rally feel. Anyways, I'm hyped for winter rally!

SUPER fun fall rally! Personally, I loved a lot of the changes/things that we tried this time. The different backdrop for each day is definitely more work, but it helps add to the spirit throughout the week. They were placed in a fairly noticeable location and quite a few pictures were taken each day. The new addition of more tik-tok/trendy days seemed to work well as lots of people (around me at least) were dressing up. The recap reels and other posts helped boost the spirit as well. I think the timing of the rally was fine since we got a month in between hoco and fall rally, and most people are ready for more events by then. I liked the style of this rally being interactive more than the wbr since it connected everything together and just made it more engaging overall. For getting volunteers faster, maybe just having co's choose more people closer to either stairs rather than the middle area since I know that during one game 26 chose someone in the very back and the middle which took a lot more time than it should've to get volunteers down...and GREAT JOB w fall rally -- looking forward to winter rally!

  3. Hey spirit!

Thank you for all your hard work putting on the Fall Rally! It was so fun and interactive, and I had tons of fun getting hyped. Having a moderator is definitely something that Spirit can consider bringing back. It made the rally feel like a storyline. The instructions and slides for the games are all great ideas that I think should be brought back. Spirit week was super fun, and the backdrop is a really great idea. I saw tons of people taking photos and posting it on insta. Personally, I don’t feel that crowd control was that much of a problem, but getting some more volunteers to help with it might not be a bad idea. Finally, the timing was actually great because after hoco we needed something to get hyped up about again, and the fall rally was perfect. Great work Spirit!

  4. hi spirit!!

i loved the new type of interactive rally style you guys had! the slides were fun to see and also helpful to know when sports teams performances/games were gonna happen. i also liked the idea of the backdrop for each day of spirit week. i saw a good amount of people stopping by to take pictures with their friends. i feel like the more trendy spirit week ideas were also a lot easier for people to participate in. i heard teachers saying how they especially liked white lie wednesday because it was something easy and accessible to participate in. i also liked how you guys set up the paper and pen booth!

as for crowd control, maybe you guys could try having a timer projected as a countdown to when the rallys going to start. this would encourage people to get to their place in the bleachers as quick as possible because they have a visual of when it'll start. for student volunteers, maybe encourage cp's to advertise on their respective class instagrams that if you would like to participate in a rally to stay at the front of the crowd. or just in general choosing people who are closer to the front. but i also dont think crowd control was something that brought down the quality of the rally. i think the timing of the rally was good!! personally it was something i looked forward to once hoco was over. i dont think it is too close to finals week and november is always a stressful month so i am sure students enjoyed the fun the rally brought out. i love the idea of a fall rally and im glad you guys were able to execute that!! amazing job and so excited for wrally!

  5. hihi spirit!

I just wanted to say congrats on pulling off yet another cracked event! As usual, the rally video was absolutely popping and I thought the concept was fire. Although some of it was inaudible due to the cheering, the fact that the rally video could even get students hyped up like that says something. As an answer to the first prompt, I do feel like the spirit week was at a random-ish time, although it was good that IDC day was on the day of the rally. IMO, I think 4 rallies and moving this one back to hoco week (when we get a normal 5 day week next year) would be better.

As for crowd control, I think at least for the games section, the class officers are doing the best they can and not too much time is wasted. However, at the beginning of the rally tech could possibly use the microphones to tell students to settle down since you guys are outside the gym and about to enter.

Again, awesome job and im looking forward to WR!

yeahhhhhhh good job on the spirit week and congrats on holding a GREAT rally. i think it was super fun and many people enjoyed this whole week. i agree with others that fall rally is a lil random, but i do understand the purpose of it. i think that just having a hoco rally makes a little more sense, but spreading them out kinda gives me something to look forward so idk.... i think that the promo was great, but getting non asb students to use the instagram sticker is a lil tough. i'm not currently sure how we can fix this, but i think finding ideas to get people to use that could be very fun. alsooooo great work on the recap videos of each day. i think if you got tech to help out we could show more groups and the recap videos would be just a little bit better?!?! otherwiseee great work spirit, def looking forward to what yall have for the next rally!!

awesome job on spirit week and especially the rally! It was so creative and unique i loved it! Starting off with the backdrop, it might've been a lot of work on pr but I think you guys should continue the backdrop since its a great way for students to take pictures with. I think many students were too focused on the theme for each day that they forgot the overall theme. It didn't seem like much of a problem because you guys were able to demonstrate the board game theme during the rally.
As for the timing for spirit week, I don't think it was much of a problem since many students at Lynbrook enjoy spirit week. I also thought it was a good amount of time away from homecoming especially because we didn't have an official rally during homecoming. I really like how you guys tried out a variety of rallies. Honestly i love both just as much, this one especially tho because it was a different twist from the original rally. With the slides and the speaker, it was a lot easier to follow through and understand the finishing goal of the rally. Overall awesome job on the rally, and I'm so excited for the next one!!

  8. Hey Spirit!

Great job on this rally and spirit week. I think that the theme and the individual spirit days were really creative and fun. I especially liked the white lie spirit day and I know that a lot of my friends did as well. I really liked the backdrop and think it would be a good thing to use moving forward. I think that the location that you guys put it during the second half of the spirit week (across from the den) was much better than where it was before. For the rally I really like the hype video but I think if it was played a bit louder and had subtitles it would be better because a lot of people could not hear it over everyone talking. I also really liked how the IDC exchange was on the day of the rally as it was fun to talk to new people and show them really what Lynbrook is all about. The rally as a whole was really entertaining with the slideshow and I am excited to see what new things you guys have for the future.

  9. hi spirit!

I think that this rally went really amazing, I saw a bunch of people dress up for all the days and I think the general excitement and hype for the rally was great. I think that the backdrops were a great idea, not only was it a nice photo op but I think it also reminded people about the spirit week and what day it was, so I think that's great. I think having the IDC exchange also really increased the hype around the rally, and it was also great for during the rally. I think the only things to improve are having subtitles on the rally video since it's hard to hear, and maybe figuring out audio for the projector so that it's louder in the future. Other than that, great job!!

  10. Hi Spirit,

Great effort in the rally this time around. I could defiantly tell that the hoco fervor around school has not weaned at all. Most people I knew were participating in the spirit days and I think for many people that's some of the best fun in the spirit weeks. One thing I think we should do next time is have time to edit the intro vid more thoroughly, including adding subtitles so that people can hear the video with so much noise in the gym. Great Job Guys!!

  11. Hey spirit!

I think the fall rally was appropriately timed. I wasn’t feeling the hoco burnout anymore and it wasn’t that close to finals. However, I don’t think the stress from fall rally is a lot for students and it’s perfectly timed to lead into winter rally signups. The promo was really good especially the posters pr made and a lot of people were dressing up but not necessarily submitting to the lynbrook app or using the sticker. Overall great rally, I loved the moderator idea and the progress bar and I look forward to Winter Rally!

I think the fall rally + spirit week was super amazing and so fun! I loved the dress up days (especially white lie Wednesday) because they felt like themes that we had not done before and I thought they were very unique! The rally was also amazing! I think that the balloon arches were awesome, but the ones on the Sophomore side kept falling and hitting some people in the crowd, I am not sure that this will be a problem in the future, but maybe we can secure the arches more if possible. Overall, amazing job!

  13. Hi spirit!

I think the fall rally was overall was really fun and honestly such a good experience. The themes were definitely out of the box and I think there is enough time for all the hoco stress to be over. In terms of promoting, however, I think there was a bit too many posts per day (not out of making but just posting in general) and caused a lot of just spam to the point people weren't as willing to repost. Either than that, the fall rally was amazing and I can't wait for winter rally!

AMAZING job on the fall rally! you guys were so organized with the handbook, the slides, and the promo. although i was absent for the spirit day portion of the spirit week, i saw a lot of pictures being posted of students' spiritwear. the spirit days this spirit week were definitely a lot more easy for students to participate in. in terms of the rally, i really liked the skit. it was really easy to follow and the slides especially were a great visual. i think the main issue was the games and explaining the rules to the students as well as coming up with backups ahead of time in case a game doesn't go as planned. you can refer to the slides when it comes to game rules to clear this issue up and make sure all spirit members are on the same page for games in case they go unplanned.

  15. Hi spirit!!!!!!
Congrats on another successful spirit week and rally! I loved the spirit days and I think all of them were easy to participate in and appealed to the students. The only thing is I feel like the backdrop could have been put up higher because when students stand in front of the backdrop, they cover all the words and you can’t see anything. If you put up the backdrop higher, the words will be just above the students’ heads and visible in photos. I do like the interactive rally better because students feel more involved and engaged in this rally. Great job spirit!!

  16. HI SPIRIT!!

Fall rally was so so so so so much fun I thought the boardgame theme was super unique and each day was easy to participate in (especially white lies I feel like everyone had fun with that because it was so accessible + easy). I personally think there is never a wrong time to have a rally-- maybe even the opposite because screaming is a great way to relieve stress. I do think maybe early November would be a better time for this rally because late november is when tutorials start getting more and more important. But obviously that also depends on spirit and how much you guys can handle. i didn't think there was anything wrong with the timing though! The moderator voice and the rally intro were both so cool and new I remember hearing it at run through and getting feeling excited for the rally. however, it was hard to hear the voice and the video because everyone was screaming, so definitely having subtitles + a higher pitched voice? would be really helpful. I personally like the interactive rally better because it feels more immersive (this is also a good time to add that I really loved the slides with the power bar because it was so so cute and also gave people an idea of what the structure of the rally would look like and built anticipation)
Overall this rally was incredibly well done-- great job!!

  17. Hi Spirit!!!!!!
Great job on spirit week and fall rally this year!!! I really liked the backdrops that you guys put up throughout the Spirit Week. I think they encouraged students to participate in spirit week, as they were able to see more people posting about it on social media. I think the timing of spirit week/rally was fine. For crowd control, it might be helpful to get some volunteers to help herd people into the right place. Overall, fantastic job on spirit week/fall rally!!!!

amazing job on lynbrook got game's spirit week + fall rally! i like how there was a mix of more basic spirit days and more tiktok-y spirit days. it definitely targeted a larger student population as people may be more comfortable with some days over others. i also really liked the story style of the rally. it felt more interactive and created unity between all the classes. on the discussion points, i think you guys can control the crowd better by having volunteers guide students to the bleachers and volunteers to guide students on stage. there could also be bold texts on the slides to tell all the students to go to the bleachers if you guys decide to continue with a story-like rally. overall, such a creative and fun rally + spirit week! (we love spirit)

  19. WHATS GOOD SPIRIT??
great work with another banger fall rally + spirit week! i'm really proud of you guys for trying something new and adding a layer of sophistication to the rally. i think it was really cool to use the project/slides!
    here's a couple points:
    - i thought the timing was honestly fine: we took some weeks off from hoco and fall rally was just chill/something to look forward to. the noncomp aspect made the rally less stressful as well. i noticed that everyone was just enjoying themselves and making decs at rally setup!
    - rally logistcs: it would be great if you can recruit demontrators/volunteers on monday (week of the rally), or even earlier. that way we can practice during rally rehearsal during thursday rally runthrough as well.
    - great work with the reels! i thought that was super cute. if you are continuing the photo backdrops, you can take pics/vids of people in front of backdrop so people are aware of the photo op.

i'm glad that we're able to show how much spirit lynbrook has to the rest of idc students!
you guys should be proud of yourselves for putting on fall rally right after hoco.
    xx

  20. Hi Spirit!

Good job with the spirit week and fally! I thought the different backdrop every day of the week was a really nice touch, and I saw a lot of people taking cute pics in front of it. For the rally, it being a new rally and an IDC exchange event, I think it came off really strong. Something I did notice, however, was the flow of the rally. It might've been the voice recording that was played to move the story along (it was kind of hard to hear), but it's just something to think about!

Good job with spirit week and rally! I know there was burnout from homecoming and a little stress since finals were coming up BUT you guys did a very great job both in organization and the rally concept. For volunteers it was very clear and easy to understand. for the rally in general, I the rally concept was also very easy to follow and I liked that IDC exchange students were able to participate. Great job!

the spirit week was so so much fun. i really enjoyed all the spirit day themes. the recap reels and the intro hype video helped generate lots of excitement!

i dont think the timing of the spirit week was a problem at all. if anything, people are experiencing post-hoco depression and are excited to show their spirit again! i liked the concept of the interactive rally but i feel like some people didn't understand what was going on. zayan's villain voice was muffled and echoey due to the gym, and it was hard to hear what he was saying. the echo in general made following the plot a bit difficult. not sure what you can do to fix this though! the good part about quad rallies last year was the lack of echo.

overall i had so much fun! thanks for a great event <3

  23. Hi Spirit!

Great job with the rally! I think that despite some of the challenges, we can tell that from the reactions of our IDC exchange friends our rallies are elite. I really liked the skits and I think the progress bar was really cool. The main thing to practice is the game demos and the transitions between them. Great work!

  24. Hi Spirit!

Thank you for all your hard work on the fall rally! I really loved the new idea with the game master and progress bar; it made the rally feel a lot more engaging and the story line much more followable. The rally games were also super fun, but sometimes it was confusing for us to know how many students to choose and what the instructions were, so I think it would be nice if COs were informed of the games beforehand (we wont scheme lol, but u can also just tell us the day before to prevent that). Great job as always!

  25. hi spirit !!

the rally was so much fun !! i think the time of the rally was actually at a good time because it wasn't too close to finals, but it also was far enough from homecoming to give people time to rest and recover. one unfortunate thing though was since the flu was going around a lot of people were out sick. this also led to a miscommunication between cps, cos, and spirit. i also think the backdrops were super cute and fun to take pictures at, but i didn't see that many people like posting pics in front of it so i don't really know how many people used it. i think in general the interactive rally was much more interesting and fun. it was also a cool touch hearing the voice over. also props to the rally intro vid. i thought that was really really cool and fun to watch. overall good job spirit !! cant wait for winter rally!!

this rally was the best one by far! the voiceover made it so professional and well put together, which was awesome because it was more interactive! I loved the game theme as it made the classes more competitive and the atmosphere more fun. even though we did win the game, i think you guys such enforce the rules harsher (give warnings, then disqualifications) for the trivia game because the freshman rep was running way way before (which yall know lol) time - maybe "threatening" them with dq after they do it once will help prevent these things from happening again. the gym looked bomb and all the class themes were very creatively chosen and fun! however, at the start with the rally intro vid of cps, it was very difficult to hear anything so im not sure if you'd want to go through all that effort if the majority of the school isn't paying attention. i think the rally moved by pretty well, but i think it ended a bit into brunch, because as soon as we were let out the bell rang. :(
overall, you guys did an amazing job and put on an unforgettable event

    love u lots!! <3

  28. hi, spirit!

one of my favorite parts of the rally was the progress bar— rallies can be confusing and overwhelming, even as someone who gets to see rally rehearsal and game practices. i think that's something y'all should definitely keep to drum up hype for each group, as well as give people a sense of what's going on (since the stage isn't always visible but the screen is).

if i'm being honest, i feel like the level of promo for this spirit week was a little bit overwhelming/confusing, with several posts going up a day. i think something that could be helpful is one masterpost at the beginning of the week with an overview slide, and then slides that describe each day individually that people can repost throughout the week instead of having to make new uploads.

  29. Hello Spirit,

I loved the rally! I sadly wasn't able to go to decs, but I'm glad that I was able to participate in the actual rally. Here are the answers to your questions:

"Given post-homecoming burnout, and how close it is to finals season, this is the first ever rally we've had in November. Is the timing of this spirit week and rally off? Are people too sick/tired? :-(" I honestly think this was the best and only week for you guys to do your rally. It was perfectly. timed for me

"We tried out many forms of promo for the spirit week, how effective was this? (backdrops & reels for each individual spirit day)" I think for the backdrop You need to do a backdrop that can be placed on the line across the quad. Have a small one for each day or a large one that has all the themes?

"Do you prefer a skit-like & interactive rally (like this one), or a simpler one to follow like Welcome Back Rally & Pep Rally?" - I really like this interactive skit and rally. A story-like makes everything more interesting. It's just that you need to make sure there are large subtitles so that people know what's going on.

"How can we have better crowd control at our rallies? Getting students to the bleachers at the beginning of the rally, and getting student volunteers for games on stage as soon as possible?" - I think more people want to go on the ground part of the gym so maybe set clearer bounds either with commissioners standing there or caution tape?
