Coffeehouse Talent Show Outro
hey asb!!
chts was last friday 2/3 in the cafeteria from 7-10pm. we would love any feedback from you guys
overall, here are the things that went well:
- lots of performer sign ups
- good attendance/food supply
- setup/cleanup was efficient
discussion points:
1. should we limit the # of performer sign ups to have more time for open mic? or even limit the amount of time each person has to perform
2. should we keep food free or have people pay?
3. should we have a more interactive script or just allow the performers to have more time on stage?
4. how else could we promo this event?
any general feedback is also appreciated! please let us know how the event was if you attended as a guest or were handling the food

hi rec!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED being at the coffeehouse talent show -- the general vibe was GREAT and it was a nice event to recognize students!! As to limiting the amount of signups, I would acutally keep it at what you guys had, as I think having signups is a nice way to ensure that there are enough performers. However, to leave more time for open mic, the performance time of each performance could be limited or cut to a shorter time to make sure more time is made. For food, it definetely depends on your budget, but at least having some of the food free is nice as a treat for those that attend. Or, you could also bump up the amount of needed tickets so that less free food is given out. For the script, I still think we need to stick to a somewhat interactive script to keep the audience engaged especially towards the end, but just keep the script shorter to just one or two lines between performances to maximum time on stage. As mentioned in class, we could do the stories with performer's pictures to help promo the performances as a sneak peak. Great job rec!!

HI REC!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS ON PULLING OFF ANOTHER AMAZING EVENT!!!! I absolutely love the vibe of coffeehouse talent show and students seemed to really enjoy it. I think we should have informed students about the 4 tickets for food thing because as I was handing out tickets at the entrance, I had to explain to each student that the tickets were for food. Besides that, I think limiting the amount of food each student can get is actually a really smart idea. Also, set up ended really early and volunteers ended up sitting around the cafeteria for 2 hours with nothing to do. Maybe next time plan for less time for setting up the event. Other than that, thank you so much for planning coffeehouse talent show <33

HEY REC!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job with Coffeehouse Talent Show. The vibes were immaculate, and it was perfect for Rec! I think each performer should have a bit less time so that everyone is able to perform because it's a very judgment free zone that a lot of people feel more comfortable performing in. I believe food should still be free because it's a big part of the wholesome vibes. The script was good, and I don’t think it detached from the performers. Overall great job rec!

HI REC!!! 💗
ReplyDeletecoffee house talent show was such a vibe!!
here are my suggestions:
1. i think you should not limit the people signing up in advance. if you do so and leave more time for open mic - but no one steps ups - then it might get a bit awkward. so, it might be best to stick to the safer side. :(( the number of performers vs the number of freelancers this year was great, and it was enjoyable watching so many different people perform.
2. keeping some items free and charging for others would be the best way to go. you could have them purchase tickets at the door, and use them for the food items that cost money. these items should be heavier, larger-quantity, and more expensive like cup-of-noodles, pastries, etc. for simpler additions - like hot cocoa, popcorn, and coffee - keeping it free would be nice as they (1) wouldn't cost you guys too much and (2) allow those who may be financially struggling/don't have money at the moment to enjoy something!!
another idea could be to give everyone 3 tickets for free, and charge them if they want more ($1/ticket > 3)
3. i think the script this time was perfect! it was short and sweet, giving the performers their spotlight.
4. the hot cocoa in the quad was a really smart idea and super interactive promotion!! maybe having teachers or asb students perform PSA announcements in their classrooms or asking Link Crew members to advertise to their freshmen would be a nice addition, as most freshmen didn't know what the event was.
i think you guys pulled off an amazing, low-stress, and destressing event for the volunteers, students, and audience!! i really loved how many different groups of people on campus - especially those who don't get much spotlight - got to perform and show off their awesome talents.
love u all!!

hey rec!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed attending/performing in coffehouse this year! I think free food was a really nice touch and probably the reason most people came, so definitely keep that. the script was nice and short, which was good because a lot of people were just waiting for the next act. it did get a little repetitive by the middle of the show, with the emcees just saying the last act was great and then introducing the next act. maybe work on having more personalized introductions for each act. this is a little unrelated, but next time definitely overestimate rehearsal time and have it overlap more with setup. it's better to have some chill time for the performers to wait before the actual event starts than having a few people still be rehearsing when audience members begin to line up or having some people not be able to rehearse at all. looking forward to next year!

hi rec!
ReplyDeletesuper super great chts once again! i performed for the second year and it was sososo amazing. feedback coming in hot! for performer signups, because i'm personally against restraining acts to certain time limits, i feel that doing a first-come, first-serve policy for acts is okay, and acts that come in later can be deferred to the open mic duration. definitely keep food free - the talents at chts are amazing, but i gotta admit that i think the free food is a strong part of the chts appeal. for the script, i think it's nice! i don't think it takes away from performances, and i personally think it's nice getting to hear your name in part of a fun script. for promo, the current modus operandi seems to work, especially with the addition of the cocoa in the quad this year. not sure if this happened this year, but maybe creating sleeves for the cups with event info would be a nice touch!

hi rec,
ReplyDeleteCoffeehouse talent show is always such a great event, I love how it features the talent in our school and gives them an environment to perform. I know the last couple years we've done coffeehouse in the cafeteria, but I was wondering if maybe in the future it might be nice to consider doing it in the library again, although there might be issues with food, I think the library might provide a slightly cozier environment but that just what I think. I think keeping food free is nice, unless it's a big hit to rec's budget, then I think selling the food items for cheap prices wouldn't be much of a problem. Also in the future it might be good to have more planning with tech especially on the side of the order of performances so that the ordering of mics/speakers/projection can be better streamlined. Other than that great job!!

hey reck,
ReplyDeleteas always, the coffee house talent show had really amazing vibes! here's my feedback:
-while it is true that free food is a large reason why several people go to CHTS, it's important to note that several people who had sports practices would come in, take the free food, and leave in 5 minutes. if there's a way to combat this (like providing free food to those with asb cards?) that would be great, so rec's money isn't going to people who aren't actually going to stay for a majority of the event's duration.
-because the point of CHTS is to highlight student talents, i think an interactive script would only take more time from the already strained schedule of performers. keeping it simple, and having maybe 1/2 puns before every performer to introduce them would be fine. just keep it short and quick!
-promo-ing the event: maybe allowing class officers to hold fundraisers @ this event? ex/ 2024 selling churros @ the encanto movie night last year. specific CO promotion on their IG is a really great way for their class to come out & support
yay!

hello rec!!
ReplyDeletecoffee house talent show every year is very comforting and this year was no difference. free food is obviously very nice and i bet all the students appreciated that, but i feel that we could potentially charge for certain (more expensive products)..... along with that, i think it'd be pretty cool to offer more free items to those with an asb card as a lil incentive. i personally thing the advertising for the event was great and that we had a pretty good show up rate?? (at least i think we did) finally, i really liked the "open mic feature" and think that to optimize the schedule for that, all performers should be aware of a limited time. otherwise, great work on continuing to put on such a comfortable event!
-Colin
hi rec!
ReplyDeletegood job on coffee house talent show! it was soso fun and the free food was a nice touch to everything. I think that sign ups should not be limited, but instead given a specific time limit so that open mic has a longer duration. Free food should definitely continue as it attracted more people and it made the overall experience more enjoyable. Obviously next year I think we could charge for some items while giving out others for free. I think overall the script was great and that maybe next year for promo, do more creative promo! Having people walk around as baristas, etc.
-ali
Hey rec,
ReplyDeletegreat job on coffeehouse, the free food was a nice touch. Since this event has the vision of creating a judgement free zone for students show off their talents. Free food hits the spot nicely because who doesn't love free food and also the food was nice comfort food like ramen and costco muffins and it overall just added a nice touch for the event. I came at the end and there was a lot of food left so I'm assuming you guys did some type of food rationing at the start to prevent people hoarding all the food. Also, the script is fine, people really just come to watch their friends perform so script or not the event still has a great guest retention span. I think cocoa in the quad is a good idea but another way to advertise is to ask the performers to record a tiny preview or interview them beforehand and ask about their experiences and put them on the asb instagram. Otherwise good job keep it up yay

heyy rec! coffee house talent show was so fun and cozy :)) especially loved all the performances and the overall vibe. here's some responses to the discussion questions:
ReplyDelete1. i think food should be free because the point of the event is to foster an open community for people to display their talents. the food adds to the feel of coziness and also motivates people to come to the event.
2. for the script, i think it's fine if it's short. at the same time though, i think a few phrases/sentences can drafted for performances. this way there isn't awkward pauses and ensures a smooth flow of the event.
3. for promo, you could ask one of the coffee house performers to sing in the quad the day of during lunch while passing out hot coca.
overall, amazing job!

ReplyDeletehi rec!
ReplyDeleteamazing job on chts, everyone had a really good time and even with allison being gone, the other recies pulled thru! i think the amount of time per person should definitely be limited since ppl can get bored of the same thing for a long time. 3-5 min max is a good limit. i think keeping either popcorn or coffee or hot cocoa free is good but charging for the rest is reasonable since they have a free option and are always allowed to bring their own food. i think allowing the performers to carry is probably best but including a few scripted lines that correlate to performers in between is fun too. i think promo thru insta, social's chalkboard, and the commission photo stories are really effective, and it being a well-known event, lots of people already come out. great job rec!

Hey Rec!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I'd like to commend you for the amazing event! I heard a lot of good things about it and I thought many people enjoyed it (from what i saw on social media). To answer your question, I think it would be best to get students to pay for certain items such as cup noodles or more expensive snacks. I think its fine to have 1-2 items be free but having students pay for. a couple snacks would be great for rec and allow rec to spend more money on other items for Wellness week or etc. Overall, great job!

Hey Rec!!
ReplyDeleteLimiting the number of performer sign-ups may be a good idea to allow for more time for open mic or for each person to perform. Perhaps having a set number of performers for each category, such as singing, spoken word, etc., could help with this.
It's worth considering having people pay for food at future CHTS events, as this could help offset the costs of providing food.
Both options have their merits. Having a more interactive script could help keep the energy up and engage the audience, while allowing performers more time on stage could allow them to showcase their talents more fully.
In terms of promoting the event, using social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to create posts and stories with eye-catching graphics could help attract more attention. Additionally, partnering with other clubs or organizations to help spread the word could also be effective.

Hey Rec!
ReplyDeleteI really wish I could have come to this years coffee house talent show since it was my favorite event last year. I think it would be good to keep the whole event more casual and not have much time-limits unless someone is taking up an absurd amount of time or is embarrassing themselves on stage. Keeping things less structured really gives the event a vibe of an actual coffee house and I really like that. I also think that limiting signups would take away from the purpose of the event. For food I think we should keep the base things like hot chocolate and popcorn free but then charge for larger items like popcorn chicken or korean hotdogs. That way everyone gets some food do munch on but can also get larger items with money. Overall great job on the Coffeehouse talent. I am really excited for next year.

hi rec!!!!
ReplyDeletecoffeehouse talent show was definitely a success. the setup was so cute and it definitely gave off a coffeehouse vibe. i enjoyed it so much!! free food was a good touch and a good incentive for people to go. but since it is free limiting it is a good idea and if people want more after they can buy more. i think script wise it doesn't need to be anything too fancy since everyone is there to watch their friends perform. i think overall the promo was good and the turnout was good. you can always do creative promo too if you want to promote the event more. overall i loved this event so much and i can't wait for next year.

Hey Rec, amazing job with CHTS! I unfortunately was out of town and could not make it, but from what I heard about it and from the clips online, it looked like a lot of fun! The homely atmosphere was nice and it was just a really fun and wholesome event that I think is a great thing to have. I think one thing to emphasize is that comfortable and laid back atmosphere; everyones there to destress after a long week and see their friends and acquaintances do cool and/or silly things, so I think Rec should take an equally chill stance and sort of be there as transitioners without a really formal or airtight script, more as acting as a sort of light transition between performers. Again, great job and I really look forward to participating next year!

Hey rec!
ReplyDeleteGreat job with this years Coffee House Talent Show. I think this is probably my favorite of events, even if I couldn't make it this year, but If it was anything like other years its great. I think when talking about how time can be allocated, I think just the cozy vibe of this event should allow it to be more flexible. By that I mean it should be a show where a little over or under time is fine if it means not breaking the vibes. I think the open mic aspect is, in the same vein, something that shouldn't be messed with, since I think CHTS is something that should be open to anyone trying to show off a talent, not just what we as biased people would like to see. Overall Great Job with this event!

hi rec!
ReplyDeletegreat job on coffee house talent show! this event has always been one of my favorites of asb because of its cozy, accepting, and heartwarming vibes. i think the free food definitely contributes to that vibe, so it's something that should be kept. another important part of the talent show is that everyone (or as many ppl as possible) have a chance to perform, so i think rather than limiting the number of performers, setting a time limit would be better. the profile picture promo was really nice, maybe another way to promote it would be to give performers the profile picture as well.
-emma
Hey Rec!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job on this event, you guys did so awesome and it was an incredibly fun and engaging event! I think that the free food was a great element and an amazing incentive to get people to come and enjoy the event. I also think that the picture promo was amazing but maybe next time you guys can use a funny video or some other form of creative promo to get more people to come. Overall amazing job!
- Kimaya
hi rec!! i have a few thoughts on your discussion points:
ReplyDelete1. could you possibly look into extending the event time by half an hour or even fifteen minutes rather than cutting performers? from what i could gather, the allotted time for each performer already wasn't too much, and i think there's definitely a demand for more open mic. this way, you can accommodate those needs without taking away from the student demand you already have.
2. free food was good! as emma said it helped add to the feel of the event. you might consider adding food for purchase to the menu as well, and that way it's up to the student whether or not they want to buy it.
super amazing and cute event guys!
kyrsten
Hey Rec!!
ReplyDeleteHere are my suggestions:
1) Script --> I understand that Rec was improvising a script as performers came up. However, there were certain lines like "welcome the best singer on campus" or "our favorite performer of the night" that were harmful to other performers. Keep in mind that each performer needs to be treated equally and with love and appreciation. Excessively praising one performer also has negative impacts.
2) Comfort Environment: I would recommend switching to a snaps environment or something that excludes excessive clapping and shouting since CHTS was losing its wholesome touch as friend groups cheered like it was a rally. I loved the positivity but this was not true to the CHTS goal anymore so keep in mind any possible changes you can make.
Thank you for a great show!
Best,
Esha
hi rec-
ReplyDeleteCoffeehouse talent show is one of my favorite events that asb kids came up with. It is so nice and cozy and you really get to see how talented so many of your peers are. To keep the safe and chill aspect of the event, I think it is best to keep to having non-clubs participate and having more open mic opportunities for audience members. I also STRONGLY recommend having many practice runthroughs with tech as this is a very technical event, especially if the open mic section is to be extended.
Hello Rec,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I loved the event. It was amazing seeing all the different performances, and it was really fun hanging out with friends, etc. I just have a few different answers to the questions provided.
I believe that it was currently a really good amount/mix between interaction of the event planners and the different acts. More time is always better for the acts and how it is perfect. In general, it is noted that one should have maybe a sentence or two at most before the event. Perhaps a more interactive script is more important for the open mic section. More about this below.
For the open mix section of the event, I missed this part btw, but I believe that a good rule of thumb is that you should have a signup sheet that is placed on a table with a volunteer. Have people, throughout the event, come over and tell the volunteer their act, and have the volunteer clear them and grant them a time frame. Maybe even have two so that there are two opinions on what is appropriate or should be done that wouldn’t be too off-putting.

HELLO ASB RECOGNITION!
ReplyDeleteCHTS this year was absolutely phenomenal! I LOVED the tulle (i think thats what it was) decor around the stage, and I think that the free food really helped make the event even better. I don't think you should limit the # of performers, as I think that the spotlight should be on students who sign up to participate who are rehearsed and prepared to perform. I think that a more interactive script is not necessary, as the spotlight of the event should be on the performers.
Overall, AMAZING JOB!
- Alex
Hey Rec (my son sagar and the others)
ReplyDeleteAmazing job with CHTS this year, its always been a cozy event and I really like the non-judgemental aspect of it. I do think that maybe we can possible extend the time of the event, as I felt like there wasn't enough time for open mic, but I also don't want to take away time from the actual performers. Open mic is always a silly moment so that's why I dont want it to take priority over the actual performances. I think something you guys can keep in mind for next year is really leaning into that cozy vibe for Coffeehouse talent show. Maybe through moody lighting, more couches, and with a cool new interesting layout for the gym. Overall, great job and goodluck next year.
-satvik
hey recog!
ReplyDeleteCHTS was super dumb litty this year! It was the first one I've attended, and I had a blast!
For your first discussion point, I don't think limiting the amount of signups will have any effect; at the end of the day, the people that want to perform will end up performing. However, if you guys are concerned about the popularity and time, limiting the time of each performance would be the most optimal.
Having food free is ok, obviously I don't know the details behind the money aspect so I can't really comment. If you guys are not losing too much, it is perfectly ok to serve free food to enhance the experience.
I thought having a script made it feel like a more cohesive event, however, in the future I think we should generally avoid using words like "most excited" or "best for last", etc. because it shows favoritism in an otherwise supportive atmosphere. Super super small tweak though.
Regards
-Jeff
